I'm choosing to read "Fate of Ophelia" as a Grateful Dead reference (to the lyrics of "Althea"), and therefore as a dig on John Mayer, who has said that Althea was the song that got him into the Dead.

I really don't think it's overstating things to say that Alan taught a generation of Internet users to watch TV differently. He's one of the best examples of how important media criticism is - not as a recommendation engine, but as a means to bring the viewer into conversation with the art itself.
Some news: yesterday was my last at Rolling Stone. For now, I'm going solo, doing all my TV reviewing, recapping, etc., at my newsletter. I hope you'll consider subscribing. Many more details here:

If this *exact* image had been in. Harris campaign ad predicting what would happen in a second Trump administration, there would have been a mass pundit meltdown.

When I told him what was for dinner last night, my picky eater 15yo said he doesn't like fish. Saw the salmon come off the grill (with a *sauce* on it), said it looked really good. He then tried it and pronounced it delicious.

I don't think a Michelin star could make me feel better about cooking!

I debated writing this. It can feel tempting, upon encountering yet another instance of this administration’s racism, to let it be. How many ways can you say the same thing over and over again? And yet we have to write it down, if for nothing else, so those who come after us know we were against it.

I’m only halfway through so far, but Joan Didion’s “The Year of Magical Thinking” is amazing.

I also loved Station Eleven by @emilymandel.bsky.social and the first two books (so far) of Hilary Mantel’s Cromwell Trilogy.
