It's just people buying more games than they can reasonably pay.
I suspect the actual answer is none of the below. It's just too easy to acquire new board games from a vast selection. Just like many people have dozens and dozens of un- and barely-played games on Steam.
A well known board game designer told me the majority of new games get played ONCE and I have a big problem w/ that. I get that not everything can be a hit, but I feel like something must be missing from design in general if this is happening. Rushed designs? Poor rulebooks? Bad visual design?

Played a 5 player game of Thunder Road Vendetta Maximum Chrome from @restorationgames.bsky.social and just had 4 players eliminated simultaneously due to Quake...it's the first time our group has ever clapped for an ending of a game. That was hilarious, the 5th player...me... was KO'd just before.

Sometimes when I see peers criticizing high production value games I feel a bit defensive… but then I see posts like this and I feel an immense pride that I work with people who create memories. Moments of emotion shared over a table with friends. Wow. It’s humbling and inspiring.
