so I have definitely been subject to what I consider scolding and annoying lectures from my left on account of working in AI and yet have not embraced fascism. I think that the guys that chalk their heel turn up to that are not telling the whole story

do people really use Design Patterns any more? it seems like maybe some of that stuff is used in fundamental library design in OOP but not elsewhere
I guess I was making use of that when writing Java for a living but as little as possible

just before our daughter was born, at the height of fear and uncertainty about covid, our friends sent us a stuffed cat that we gave a relevant name. over time my daughter adopted it as her own. so that is why her cherished childhood lovey is named Pandemic The Kitty

saw something about how this is a simple route to classifying AI as something that is categorically bad and should thus be regulated out of existence (whether true or not) and I think there is something to that
"AI is bad because it requires cooling" being the dominant pushback narrative is so insane to me. that's just computers! AI is bad if it does phrenology!

I am a senior engineer at a large tech company, which means I do not have any meaningful seniority. people with meaningful seniority are referred to as staff. so in my self evaluation I don't need to evaluate my staff-ness (aka seniority), only my seniority.

I really loved deriving things from first principals (physics undergrad) and while there are some opportunities for that in AI world they tend either not to work or lag implementation and experiment (by years) rather than drive it

I don't really know what to think about the market reaction to AI any more. it is a wildly useful technology that seems to be used largely to annoy people. there is evidence that scaling up compute makes a lot of sense from a technical perspective. but enough to prop up an economy?
