This is the immigration expert at the Cato Institute. (As in “even the conservative Cato Institute…”)
My new analysis: The administration misleads and ignores courts most often in immigration cases. In fact, a majority of the instances identified in a compilation by @justsecurity.org were about immigration. When deportations are on the line, expect them to lie to courts. www.cato.org/blog/admin-m...

The problem of our time is that oligarchs have figured out how to use control of modern media to manipulate public opinion and corrupt democracies from the inside
From @status.news in their review and comment on Bari Weiss after her meeting with all hands today:

"installed by Ellison not primarily to strengthen their journalism... but to steer CBS News into waters more favorable to Donald Trump and the MAGA movement."

That's pretty much how I view it.

it is the same playbook everywhere. “vote for us! we will make you great again by punishing the people you hate! do not pay attention to the fact that we’re also shoveling your money into the pockets of the uber wealthy and building a giant boot to step on your face too (preferably forever)”
The UK version of “Project 2025” by the Reform party includes a British ICE, a concentration camp for 24,000 people, mass surveillance and withdrawing from refugee, anti-torture and anti-trafficking conventions.

It’s on their website. That’s how comfortable fascists are in the UK today.

It must be really hard to have spent so much time, so much money on education, so much networking, to finally arrive at CBS news and they appoint the stupidest person in public life to be the boss. It is like appointing RFK Jr. Dean of the Johns Hopkins Medical school.

Yes. You are correct. "We are making CBS more conservative" would be too obvious. "I am blocking the endorsement of Harris" (Bezos) cost the Post about 10 percent of its audience immediately (and more in the long term.) And yes, authoritarians rely on allied media to be circumspect.
I mean as soon as they said that they’d absolutely lose a huge % of readers immediately.

Reports I’ve heard from much more press-restrictive countries are that much of the constraints are done in a subtle manner. The illusions via plausible deniability are incredibly valuable to authoritarians.

Having lived through this at the Post, these people refuse to say, "I want to make this news outlet more conservative." So we get lots of lip service about new ideas, innovation and reporting. But Bari Weiss runs a website! It breaks very little news, and all of that is anti-left.
Part two of three, with Bari Weiss announcing a CBS News masthead, promoting a new bench of contributors, and promising "to invest even more in revelatory journalism:"
