I sent the new novel to my new agent and felt jubilant. There is no redemptive arc. Lessons are not learned. You know that and go backwards into the book. It’s sad and necessary, I think. Not all stories can end with a sort of hospitable uplift at the end and that can be clear from first lines

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 50:
Not all dialogue has to be verbal. What a character does (or not) matters as much as what they say. Rather than fill up your dialogue with descriptions of *how* your characters say their lines, try including some actions too. Looking away; fidgeting; being silent.

In 2022 I wrote a teaching guide drawing on a few things I could do. It couldn’t be sent out on general submission because I did not have a relevant platform from which to bound. That is I did not have a public profile in this area although I was knowledgeable. I’d like to unpick this for you

PLEASE DO NOT ASK STAFF WHERE DRACULA’S GRAVE IS THERE ISN’T ONE.

Iconic sign from St Mary’s Church next to Whitby Abbey. I love that people think Bram Stoker’s Dracula was a real person/vampire who lived and died in Whitby.

If you’re in Derby then head along to the Derby Book Festival in the Market Hall. Buy some books, have a browse, eat at one of the great food places.

And book a stay at the Flamingo Hotel. 😆
All set up Derby Book Festival with our own books and a carefully curated selection from across the indie presses and some writers I absolutely love!!

@drewgum.bsky.social is popping by to sign a few copies of 🦩🏩 as well - so looking forward to catching up with him!!

Here until 4pm!! #booksky

The utter pleasure at rereading a Tessa Hadley short story, in anticipation of teaching it to MA students, and seeing some of the mechanics surface, and sensing too how much remains submerged.

She’s just so good. And she works in layers.
Two brilliant uses of comma splice in Tessa Hadley’s short story Funny Little Snake, showing in its slapdash punctuation narrator Valerie’s instructive dismissal of her awful professor husband Gil’s self-serving tales.

Also. Stay safe my darlings. And don’t go on twitter. I’m going to share something with you. Four years ago, I wrote openly and in as calm a manner as I could, but bigotries are intersectional and to uproot them requires very painful introspection. I understand that but owe it no apology
The apology and podcast re K Cl*****. I stand by what i said. I have a background in education and my focus - although I’m partly in publishing - was always what it’s okay to say about minors in your care. There was transgression here; I’d suggest there were safeguarding issues. THAT is the locus

Early this morning, our city still plunged into darkness, I set off to walk the Brooklyn Bridge.

As the sun came up, we were joined by canvassers, labor leaders, elected officials, and working people — a movement to bring a new day to our city.

Tomorrow, we win it together.
