The problem with ICE is not that it's targeting people who aren't criminals. The problem with ICE is that it's an unaccountable secret deportation police. It cannot be reformed under a better president. It can be made less terrible, but the instrument of repression remains for the next tyrant.

While at the same time attempting to ramp up said legal warfare. It's the fundamental "there are four people running the government and they're all insane rabid racoons fighting in an overcoat" problem where you can't blow up state capacity and then try and use the state to go after people!

Something that I would note is that the Trump administration is doing something really self sabotaging right now, in that it's removed the professionalism and actual bodies necessary to pursue large scale legal warfare against their foes (Lindsey Halligan and Aline Habba? Really?)

The single biggest problem of the Trump administration is that an authoritarian government REQUIRES MORE PEOPLE, NOT LESS.

You can't fire 12% of workforce and then go "Huh, lets use the state to crush all dissent! Brilliant!"

Morris' analysis on polling out today is very good imho. Tracking polls vs. themselves and the overarching change in the environment is the real way you should read polling (with the caveat that polling is not predictive and should not be treated as such)

I've known Shayy for a few years after a friend of mine introduced me to the UTDR Speedrunning community. I'm utterly disappointed in them and its so upsetting learning how many people they've hurt.

While in the community, Shayy has committed reprehensible acts including grooming multiple fans and assaulting their now ex-partner. They are an active danger to the community. Please read

a director's job is not only to create their own ideas, but also to manage the ideas of every team member around them! it's called the collaborative process of making a work of art as a team! always remember that.
Just because I'm the writer/director of TADC doesn't mean I deserve all the credit for everything. There MANY times when a board artist or an animator will come up with a detail or shot that elevate the themes/characterization in a way I didn't even think of, and I'm like "fuuuuuck that's genius..."

I'm disgusted with what shayy did and I never want them to ever come back to any again. I thought they were cool but they just had to go and do deplorable stuff...

I think it's a misunderstanding of where we are. There is far too much focus on European and Asian authoritarian structures that require massive, expanded state apparatuses.

We are in some dumb form of Peronism and small state-ism combined with not actually knowing who to help.

Actual authoritarianism requires expansions of the administrative state I cry, once again ignored.
I mean yeah. But also you need lots of lawyers to do what DOJ needs to do and firing all of them without replacement means you can't do anything.
Absolutely no way to read this and not conclude that the Department of Justice has been deeply corrupted. And this is from a time when career lawyers were in place, pushing back against illegality. With firings and resignations, the politicization will just get worse.

And yeah, it actually does matter. Because resistance against an encroaching administrative state and resistance against whatever the fuck that Trumpism is are two very very different things.

I'm fully happy to say that we're in some form of unconsolidated competitive authoritarian regime - I think it's probably your best way of describing what's going on. Though I'd also argue that particular nature of American politics is not just limited to Trump.

I'm really not sure why people are dying on this hill when fascism is a very specific thing. We can be some manner of authoritarian and everyone's points about resistance and whatever still are valid.

This is a question of definition and I really don't get why that's hard
Uh, suppression of dissent and extermination of all pluralist alternatives, and mass mobilization through a single party state, among other important things
Tom is focused here on just one trait of a fascist state - suppression of dissent - ignoring other traits such as media capture, ultranationalism, use of state violence to quash opposition, etc. Ok, the state is not fully fascist yet, but you can’t argue we’re not headed that way.
