2026 Reading goals.

(this is laughable, because I NEVER complete the task. But, it's good to have goals.)

A fantasy, an espionage, a classic, a translated. More folk horror, more occult, more magick, more dark academia (and TBF, I'm not really liking some of the DA I've read, go darker please!).

If this awful world has room for a petty gripe: I'm blown away by the streaming success of SHE RIDES SHOTGUN. But! Streaming's "shrink the movie the moment the closing credits start" means that most viewers have no idea it's based on a novel. And I, personally, would like it better if they did know.

Apparently I'm going to write parts of my WIP out of order. Never really done that before, but I'm willing to give it my all right now. Also deciding to not dive into the post apocalyptic/sword & sorcery elements at this time. Leaning to dark contemporary fantasy/horror road trip.

Woooweee the sheer volume of posts about AI stuff today has been something else. A lot of UGH, then cooler heads prevailing.

AI is not here to stay, it was never HERE to begin with. It's not the way, there's no need to get in while it's hot, you're not missing out.

"Tell me what you did to me." A low hiss. "You first." Jacob sighs, swipes a hand down his face. "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty," he breathes. "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God. In Him will I trust. Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence." "Oh, yes, deliver." The demon sounds musing. "Getting back to that. All right, so you're dealing with some shit. I say again, you don't seem all that concerned about the poor kid you've chained to your fucking bed. The kid who, in case you haven't noticed, isn't doing so hot. You haven't tried to make me leave him. Haven't even seemed interested." It bares its teeth in another sneer. "What's wrong? Are you scared you can't?" "When this is all over, I will." "Really. Well. Just to warn you, I think you might have a hard time with it. And if you try to take a page out of all those movies, tell me to take you instead..." The sneer flows into a teasing, vaguely feline smile. "That's not going to mean what it means in the movies, love. Oh, it's going to be so much sweeter than that." Jacob pulls in a breath, shakes his head. "I've been given power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. When it's time, if I tell you to go, you'll go." "What if he doesn't want me to go?" A long silence. Jacob studies the thing on the bed: the slenderness that's so easy to see as thin frailty, a body which hasn't received the full nourishment it needs in far too long. The need he sensed in it-which might have been an act, but might not. Might have been genuine. Might have been a glimpse of the kid in question. That kid might very well not be lost beyond recovery. Someone in desperate circumstances might invite a demon in, if the demon told them the right lies. It might not have to apply much force. He knows that all too well. "I didn't have to force him at all, that's the thing." As if it can read his mind. Perhaps it can. "I didn't lie. I didn't disguise myself. He knew exactly what I was, and he invited me in. He wanted me inside him. He begged for it." It nearly moans the last words, arching slightly as if responding to a pulse of pleasure. "You'd be amazed how often that happens." "I don't think I would." "Oh, I do." The demon pushes itself farther up and leans forward, grinning. "Let me tell you a story, which you probably already believe: There are so many of us out there. You only hear about the ones who fuck it up. Who force it. Get clumsy about it." Its lips wrinkle briefly with distaste. "The oppressors. But there are way more who never do. We're kind. We let them make the choice. We're accepted, welcomed. We're loved. Millions of us walking around out there, billions, so close to you, and you never see us at all. Because there's no war here, Jacob. Not anymore. Whatever you want to think we are, we won a long time ago."
