31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Time for a DOUBLE FEATURE!

Two films, both remakes, that surpass the originals in style and presentation, and the originals are classics in their own way. I'm talking about INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and THE FLY.

Day 30

THE THING, one of two horror remakes that surpass the original films, and this one sets the benchmark for practical effects still used today. I first saw this on Cinemax on a Sunday evening decades ago and it became an instant all-time favorite film.

Day 29

The first time I saw ALIEN was on The Movie Channel years after it released in the theater, so it already had a stellar reputation. Today, it is considered a classic in the genre, and one of the scariest films ever made.

The calm before the storm.

Day 28

Okay folks, we're in the homestretch.

Welcome to FRIGHT NIGHT ... for real. I love this movie so much it inspired my own vampire novel, THE SMALL HOURS, available now through @ghoulish.bsky.social.

Day 27

THE NIGHT STALKER, both the films and the series, captivated my attention when I was younger. 6 year-old me was so pissed when it was cancelled I wanted my dad to call the tv station and demand they put it back on.

31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN

Day 26

Another polarizing film, I absolutely loved BRING HER BACK. Raw, brutal, intense, and steeped in the occult. People messing with things that are better left alone.

Day 25

Another polarizing film, HEREDITARY is one of those films people either love or love to hate. I personally love it.

31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN

Day 24

This is a very polarizing film, but I really enjoyed TALK TO ME. I love that it's part of a larger world the Philippou Bros. are creating, a world where the occult not only works but is a thing that can be bought and traded...so many fucked up things to mess with there.

Day 23

Do you read Sutter Cane?

Carpenter's IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is the epitome of fun, weird, cosmic, meta horror. I love it so much. Recently got the new Sutter Cane book (yes, it's real) going to dig into it soon.

You will be absolutely terrified when you watch TERRIFIED, Demián Rugna's first horror film.

Day 21

THE ISLAND OF DR MOREAU (1977). I was ten years old, and my father took me the theater to see this film. It warped my mind forever.

Day 20

Tobe Hooper's LIFEFORCE is the totally bonkers naked space vampire with Patrick Stewart movie you need in your life right now.

31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN

Day 19

Going through new faves, and WHEN EVIL LURKS hits the mark. Relentless and diabolical, this film is one of the true hallmarks of the Fuck Around/Find Out horror genre. They broke every rule for dealing with the evil organically, which is why this one is a must watch.
October 19, 2025 at 4:11 PM
I (re)watched FASCINATION last night. Strange movie. I remember seeing this on Cinemax or Showtime back in the day. Of course, I probably watched it for reasons other than horror, though it's still a horny vampire film.

31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN

Day 18

I typically don't like slashers. There are exceptions, of course, and IN A VIOLENT NATURE is one of those exceptions. From the shift in POV, to the relentless brutality, including some well-done but still over-the-top kill scenes, this one stands out as one the best.

31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN

Day 17

THE BRIDES OF DRACULA

My first Dracula film didn't even feature Dracula. I knew who he was from other sources at the time (more on that soon) but the Saturday afternoon Creature Feature showed mostly Hammer and Roger Corman films.
October 17, 2025 at 1:14 PM
31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN

Day 16

The first Universal Horror film I watched was FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN on the Saturday afternoon Creature Feature. It would be over 10 years later before I finally got a chance to see the original Universal Frankenstein film.

Hammer Horror filled in the gaps.

31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN

Day 15

Andy Davidson's IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN bled new life into a time worn trope, bringing a fresh spurt of blood into the vampire mythos by embracing everything about the bloodsuckers that scare the hell out of us.

One of the best damn vampires novels I've ever read.

31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN

Day 14

David Fincher has this ability to get under your skin with his films, getting close to the filth and grime and decadence of the world...so close you might need a shower after watching. ZODIAC is one of those films, and this panic inducing scenes is one of his scariest.

MIDNIGHT MASS, Mike Flanagan's homage to vampires and 'Salem's Lot, is one of those rare TV series that fires on all cylinders each episode.
