I've had dreams come true. And plenty of dreams that crashed and burned. And then there's a specific one about the Eccles Theater in Sundance, which now will never come true as this is the last year in Park City. More here: bobderosawriter.substack.com/p/dreaming-o...
Dreaming of Sundance (and other things)
When I first moved to LA, nearly 25 years ago, I had the same dreams that many new screenwriters have.

I was invited to partake in a zoom writing session this morning, so I hung out on the couch and polished a new short story while this little guy fell asleep on my wrist. Not a bad start to the day.

Incredible event last night at the Frankenstein exhibit with @realgdt.bsky.social doing a Q&A moderated by Barry Jenkins. The design work on display was stunning & hearing Guillermo speak of his creative process was exhilarating. I understand now how he inspires hundreds of artists to do their best.

I'm walking into 2026 like this. Not sure if I'm gonna be the one-eyed little cat giving hugs or the three-legged big cat taking em. Either way, let's go.

Every year I do a writing year-end where I list everything I've written/accomplished and wow, for a year that felt like hot garbage, with very little professional news to speak of, I'm surprised how much I got done in 2025. 1/4

Love this quote from the wonderful Courtney Maum, which totally captures the me I try to present in my newsletter and social media: "I write to you as someone who has had big wins and some dreams realized, but who has had her heart crushed along the way."

After multiple stops and endless traffic all over the valley, I can confidently say that everyone in Los Angeles has either had it up to here or is deeply sad. I think I'm going to redo my weekend to do list. Now my main goal is to let a little dog or cat fall asleep on me. And that's enough.

Tough times in the entertainment business lately. Despite all that, someone suggested I was thriving. The reality? I'm doing what just about everyone is doing...hanging on by my fingernails. More here: bobderosawriter.substack.com/p/the-path
The Path
In trading emails with a writer friend recently, I did the normal writer catch-up thing which was to give a quick summary of what I’ve been working on.

If you know me, then you know two of my favorite things in entertainment are Zooey Deschanel and assassin stories. Today, finally, it all comes together in my new short story. www.jerseydevilpress.com?page_id=9120

I was new to LA, walking in Hollywood, when Peter Greene ran up to me, said, "Hey buddy!" He was looking for the place where he could pay his utility bill. I told him I didn't know, but I was a fan of his work. He said thanks and ran off. #ZedsDead www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

Watching Aliens in 70mm on a first date in high school, thinking I'd be the manly protector if my date got scared. Instead, I screamed my face off the entire time. Could not have loved it more.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

New script going out in January. Packaged script going to buyers in uh January. Audio pitch notes probably coming in ...you know. I guess the universe is sending a message to take the rest of 2025 off, isn't it?

Crossing things off my to-do list, not because I did them, but cuz I figure, well, maybe next year.
What are we doing with the rest of this year?

I'll never forget meeting my (now, very good) friend in the lobby of Sacred Fools in Hollywood. When I said I was a screenwriter and he asked what I'd written, I beckoned him to step outside and I pointed at the giant KILLERS poster across the street and said, "That."
"Oh, have you written anything I've heard of?"
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

Someone integral to my career just called after reading my new script and began with, "Wow, you're a great writer!" Those calls don't come very often, but it still feels really good when they do!

A speculative publication I'm interested in submitting to said they offer brownie points if a story makes them chuckle. Challenge accepted.

New script off to my agent! It's darker than I normally write, but this story got its hooks in me. Really it's the main character. Something about her has been scratching at the inside of my skull for the last couple years. We'll see if she sees the light of day. #scriptsky

The first step in packaging a script is usually landing a director and it's awesome when you do - except most directors attach to multiple projects to hedge their bets which means if another one goes first, then your movie's either in line or dead. Why am I sharing this? Uh no reason. Sigh.

People often say they want a Presidential candidate they feel they can have a beer with. I want a candidate willing to hold an umbrella over a little dog while she pees in the rain.

My mother called to tell me that due to my concern with rising health insurance rates, I should get a job at Wal Mart for their sweet benefits and just "write at night." If she's not careful, she's going to accidentally land a career in politics.

Had a great time at the LA premiere of the indie film American Solitaire (my wife did the costumes!) It's a lovely film about a veteran wrestling with America's complicated relationship with guns. Hopefully it'll be at a film festival near you SOON!

When it was apparent that the film & TV business was dying, I decided to balance my work with projects in audio fiction & book publishing and now I'm fully invested in three dying industries instead of one. I'll let you know how that shakes out.
