Some on here have decided that liking Matt Yglesias' writing is unforgivable.

But that's their loss.

What the research really says about immigration politics
The literature finds that “accommodating” restrictionists doesn’t work — but you should read it carefully.

In 1290, Edward I issued an edict expelling all Jews from England, becoming the first European state in history to do so. The law was issued on the ninth of Ab, just to be an extra asshole about it, and land and property were forfeited to the crown.

Pretty much all high-end chain burgers (eg Fiveguys) just taste of chewy gristle - I prefer the ones with greasy onions you get from the fairground
sourdough is overrated
Unironically we need more fights about generic food like yesterday’s cola situation which is why I’m going to start one right now:

My daughter keeps losing work on her MacBook.

She's using MS Office apps but they just keep failing her with weird sync issues and she keeps losing tonnes of work.

I use computers a lot but I just don't have these issues so I have no idea what to suggest to her?

My LLM command-line tool and Python library now has support for tool calling! You can define tools as Python functions or bundle them in plugins, and LLM can then make them available to models. OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and Ollama are supported so far.

LLM 0.26 is out with the biggest new feature since I started the project: support for tools. You can now use the LLM CLI tool—and Python library—to grant LLMs from …

For some reason this is controversial: no, the enemy isn't death.

Evolution could have chosen for us to live forever, but it didn't because death is useful.

Hey @premnsikka.bsky.social - interesting article.

You’re obviously right that we desperately need to address marginal cost pricing. Though strangely you don’t mention the Contracts for Difference (CfDs) which secure the cost of low carbon energy, thereby saving the public & industry £££.
Privatisation Racket.

20 companies controlling UK supply, production, transmission of energy made operating profits of £514bn in 2020-24.

Profit margins at electricity/gas supply companies up by 363%; electricity generation up by 198%.

They get subsidies too.

More in the linked article.
With bills having gone up, it’s time to take energy back into public ownership
The obscene profits of the energy industry show the sector is broken

If someone says "where's the bin?" I have to say "I int bin nowhere" in my most fake broad Prestonian
What's the worst joke you're committed to? Mine is to say 'thank god you're charging more for that. Every year, thousands die drilling those little holes' whenever website tries to upsell me more memory on some form of device. A joke that a) isn't funny b) no-one but me can hear.

They are Nazis. This is a Nazi salute. They are not hiding it, or dog whistling, they are announcing it. They have come out as Nazis.

Show the people in your life these images all together. Make them understand this is not an accident, or a fluke.

It is happening here.

I suspect I’m not going to change a lot of minds on this one, but one thing I’ve thought about a lot is how we discuss historical ‘beliefs’ like this more carefully. (1/n)
