Trump has lost two heavily whipped votes in the House on his signature economic policy in the last 24 hours.

This is a big f-ing deal.
In an extraordinary rebuke of Trump, and his signature economic policy, the House voted tonight to repeal Trump's tariffs on Canada 219-211.

Both the Senate and House have now voted to repeal Trump's tariffs on Canada.

I think the greatest gift college professors in the humanities can give to students right now is a seminar room where, for 80 minutes twice a week, nothing that happens to them is a sales pitch for an AI product.

So Republicans are shrinking the population, cutting access to health care, increasing the velocity of disease, and defunding basic research. And that’ll somehow grow the economy by 15% per annum.

Anybody get the sense that these people have no clue what they’re doing?
Look folks, if you want to grow the economy you can either increase productivity or increase the size of the population. The Trump Administration is trying to shrink the population via a campaign of terror against immigrants and killing productivity gains via defunding science and unis.
"In 2023, the economy added 3 million jobs. In 2024, still under Biden, it added 2.2 million jobs. In 2025, under Trump, it added just 181,000 jobs. This is a story about an economy getting throttled by one man and his capricious, destructive governance."

I’ve said something like this here before, but it bears repeating today: Pam Bondi is a contemporary from my region, same college, etc., so I’ve watched her rise for decades. I assure you a more contemptible, grasping, power-mad wretch never emerged from these sunny shores.
BONDI: You didn't ask Merrick Garland anything about Epstein

BALINT: Weak sauce

BONDI: And with this antisemitic culture right now, she voted against a resolution--

BALINT: You want to go there! Really? Talking about antisemitism to a woman who lost her grandfather in the Holocaust! *storms off*

Here for spicy biathlon lore.
Incidentally, the winningest male biathlete of all time (and, in fact, the winningest Winter Olympian of all time), Norway’s Ole Einar Bjørndalen, is married to the winningest female biathlete of all time, Belarus’ Darya Domracheva. I bet they either talk about the biathlon all the time or never

This is the aftermath of an ICE kidnapping a few blocks from my home in St. Paul—an hour ago. A quiet street full of broken glass and at least three wrecked cars. The target of the kidnapping was taken away by ambulance. He was on a stretcher and covered by a sheet, though a cop said he was alive.

This is the pervasive view of Trumpism. They never apologize for anything bc to them that's a sign of weakness and accountability.
Given repeated opportunities, AG Bondi repeatedly refuses to apologize for exposing the identities, sensitive information, and photographs of Epstein victims, attacking lawmakers for asking the question.

So much of this masturbatory philosophizing about AI is meant to distract from the multitudinous harms it has already caused and tremendous harms that it will cost to the country and humanity. And that the New Yorker is participating in it makes me very sad.

So. Much. Winning.
wow -- Bondi throws a fit in response to Nadler's question about how many of Epstein's co-conspirators, if any, she's investigating, aggressively pointing at him and yelling. The hearing then devolves into chaos and Raskin and Bondi start yelling at each other.

Call me a stickler, but I do not think former Supreme Court clerks who are now practicing lawyers with *multiple cases* pending before the Court should be publishing fawning op-eds about how “kind, humble, thoughtful and selfless” their old boss is

New Weather West update is out now! Some relief, at last, from recent record warmth and astonishing lack of Mountain West snow in the coming days as cooler/wetter pattern returns. But just how much relief should we expect? Read more:
After a long, dry, and very warm January, a cooler & wetter pattern will return to the U.S. West, with partial relief amid record-low mountain snowpack - Weather West
Record warm winter-to-date continues across most of the American West; already abysmal mountain snowpack dips to record low levels in many areas (except...higher elevations in southern Sierra!) Well, it sure has been a winter to remember thus far across the Western U.S. Astonishing, record-breaking warmth has pervaded nearly entire region (with few exceptions, though one

Here's what DHS doesn't want you to know: Working for ICE is one of the safest jobs in America — and last year was the second-safest year for the agency on record.

And the doxxing? It hasn't actually happened even once.

Analysis | Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show was expected to provoke. Did it?
The Bad Bunny Super Bowl show nodded to injustices in Puerto Rico but mostly evoked wholesome family values that meshed with the more sentimental commercials.
