very interesting! since the white-shield is only a visual variation with no clear way to separate them from red-shielded counterparts, I think I'll hold off on reporting this sighting as anything conclusive. thank you for the help!

The amount of red also varies seasonally, I think. Probably some hormonal element involved there too. Which might help explain why more white shields are reported in winter months.

fellow birders, some ID advice would be appreciated! found this american coot in California; we usually have red-shielded coots here, but this one appears to be white-shielded. just want to make sure my ID is correct before I submit since eBird flags it as pretty rare

This also means my paper on 3D biodiversity patterns in the Atlantic has a real issue number now. Don't overlook the supplemental material--there are gifs showing the 3D patterns as vertical transects sweeping across the ocean.

#FishADay Oxylebius pictus Painted Greenling. NE Pacific; shallow rocky areas. Has bounced around a bit taxonomically thanks to its weird pointy head, but (according to Eschmeyer's Catalog) it's currently found with the rest of the greenlings in Hexagrammidae. youtu.be/Gk3FMfx-2KQ
