“The Fabian Society's Joe Dromey could not be more wrong in arguing that the Labour leadership should attack the Greens and Reform UK as representing
"twin populisms" (Zack Polanski offering voters fantasy solutions, says head of Fabian Society, 31 December). Dromey dismisses the Green party's support for a wealth tax as a "fantasy" policy. Yet this is a policy that eight in 10 Labour voters support. I have been campaigning for wealth taxes for years, and large numbers of Labour MPs now back such a measure.
Dromey argues that a wealth tax could not fund all the investment we need in our communities. But that is not an argument against it, but to make it part of a wider package of reforms to tackle the deep inequality that scars our society. A wealth tax of 2% on assets over £10m could raise £24bn a year. Equalising capital gains tax rates with income tax and imposing a windfall tax on the super-profits of the banks could take that total closer to £50bn.
This would not only provide vital resources to support people still hit hard by the cost of living crisis and to fund our public services. It would also send a clear signal that a Labour government is prepared to act against our broken economic model.
While a tiny elite get ever richer, the living standards of the vast majority have stagnated since the bankers crashed the economy over 15 years ago. With growth weak and unlikely to improve without structural change, Labour must grasp the nettle of redistribution.
Dromey's approach is also a political dead end. Labour is losing more voters to the Greens, and to those saying they will not vote, than it is to Reform. Losing those voters risks opening the door to Reform victories. Calling on the Labour leadership to reject popular social democratic policies is not only a moral mistake but an electoral one.

Remembering as a form of forgetting.

This kind of thing is exactly the kind of empty, disabling performance that got us here. In an emergency these folks are performing thoughts and prayers, broadcasting an *image* of action that is designed to substitute any actual action, and thereby downregulate people's internal distress signals, whilst *nothing* about the urgency of the situation is actually changed. To call such behaviour merely pitiful or embarrassing is to downplay how damaging it is.
They’re anaesthetising us - and themselves as well - in a situations when being activated, and getting active, is the appropriate response. It's what they've been doing all along, but it becomes more obvious as the crisis deepens.None of these poor fools is a leader. They are really not smarter or more skilled than we are, no matter how many Ivy League degrees they have between them. At some point we're going to have to start working out how we save ourselves.

This gets progressively funnier with every use of the term "floppy".

One of Britain’s most senior police officers has launched an angry tirade against Extinction Rebellion protesters going “all floppy” when they get arrested.

Sir Stephen House, the deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan police, said the tactic of going limp was a “flipping nuisance” as it required extra officers to drag protesters away.

House told a London assembly police and crime committee hearing: “We have asked them to stop being floppy. And that might seem like a silly thing to say, but when we arrest them and pick them up, they go all floppy, which is why you see four or five officers carrying them away. It’s a complete waste of officers’ time, and a complete pain in the neck.”

Just got back from a counter-protest at an anti-migrant protest in Norwich. There was a rare, beautiful moment when the anti-migrant protesters started singing “Keir Starmer’s a wanker”, and the counter-protesters joined in with full voice.
