I remain skeptical that engineers will investigate every alert if experience shows that most alerts are false alarms. Hard to build reliable systems that way.

Exceptionalizing antisemitism as the only acceptable form of bigotry to care about on campus is not only unfair to so many other marginalized groups who face bigotry; it's ultimately bad for Jews, too. Keeping Jews as the sole protected class of the government never works out for us in the end.

but that they weren't hiding it well

I am, but it’s fine, because every post is only one sentence, and I only put one space after commas.
There’s a 300-character limit on posts here and some of you are still putting two spaces between each sentence, smh.

Freedom of movement is a fundamental human right. Borders require constant, systemic violence. I am convinced, however many years from now it takes, we will look back at this barbaric system with the same antipathy as some countries' systems of internal passports and "papers please"
idk, I just think maybe the argument about undocumented immigrants shouldn't be about how mass deportations will ruin the economy by robbing us of our freedom to exploit them.

I wonder if congestion pricing will affect suburban attitudes to high density housing near commuter rail stations. Doesn’t help with the “I got mine / no more room” mentality, but maybe with the attitude that people who ride the train belong to a lower social class?

When you run out of ideas to spend money improving your own life, and decide to increase the QOL differential by making life worse for the peasants.
i am convinced that these people are death worshippers who want to spread as much disease and sickness as possible (i also think this is all tied up in eugenic beliefs about the “survival of the fittest” www.nytimes.com/2024/12/13/h...

“dining sheds are legal if they have wheels” is a weird loophole, but I guess we can roll with it. Maybe a few pickup trucks with flowerbeds double parked on alternate sides as traffic calming?
lmfao in case you needed proof of how stupid NYC’s new outdoor dining rules are, L’industrie (top slice shop in the city) just parked an old school bus outside and turned it into a dining area

This is why it’s important to clarify whether “tech” means technology or “VC-backed software companies”
I’ve really flipped on “tech won’t save us” because it seems to have gone from correctly noting that you can’t solve the collective action or principle-agent problems with apps to being resistant to ever admitting that technological change could change the underlying constraints of specific problems

My main interaction with healthcare is annual enrollment, and even that reveals the core problem of being asked to make decisions with serious consequences based on no information.

The key to ousting Adams is committing to running together and asking all supporters *not to rank Adams on their ballots.* Running an RCV race between people who are ideologically aligned means working together and building coalitions through all five slots on the ballot.
In 333 days we can get rid of him, but it’ll take progressive candidates working together and not canceling each other out. New York needs to unite behind a strong Democratic and/or WP candidate, if we had done this in 2021 we would not have Eric Adams now.

Neighborhood appliance store where you can take in your food processor, get it retrofitted with an IEC C14 socket.
Hear me out ...

Invent a line of kitchen appliances that can all use the same electrical cord that can unplug from the appliance.
You could have 2-3 cords if you need to, but be able to store the appliances in the cupboard without dealing with the freaking cords.

They should study us to find out why we keep making such insecure systems.
Why should security folks study software engineering (i.e. the practice of writing software in/with other teams over a long period of time)?

Managing software is really about managing *complexity* and untamed complexity is highly correlated with poor security. Try to address both at the same time.

I had to teach high school students about files circa 2015. Took five minutes in the first week of class.
Kind of wish I’d pushed for that first week of html lessons to become part of the non-elective curriculum for every student.
Heard from guy that teaches coding bootcamps. He has to teach them what a folder is. I'm gonna have a job forever.

Finally read Joe Duffy’s retrospective on Midori OS this weekend. Cool ideas about exceptions, actors / message passing. Also hints of how MSR’s investment in Haskell makes it into their commercial products.

PV, heat pumps, LEDs, video phones. We we have the SF tech. Like the joke about passing up rescue by boat because we’re waiting for a miracle.
I worry a little bit that too many people think that science fiction type technology is going to swoop in and save the day with respect to climate change
