My wife and I went to @belmontbooks.bsky.social yesterday to see my books! Always so exciting (especially did not realize my hair also seemed a bit wackadoodle but oh well)

Thanks to the engaged, thoughtful, capacity crowd who braved darkness and inside-of-128 traffic last night, and to the most excellent @belmontbooks.bsky.social for hosting. You rock.
Tonight -- the on sale day for Nations Apart -- I'll be at @belmontbooks.bsky.social in the eponymous Boston suburb. (Yes, the town was named for the bookstore... Don't argue, I'm a historian.) Come say hello.

8 years ago today, we opened our doors for the first time! After months of buildout, ordering (and shelving!) inventory, and hiring, we took the paper off the windows and opened the doors. It was such a special day and we took photos! If you stop by today, please wish a happy birthday!

An Ohio man checked out 100 Black, Jewish, and LGBTQ books—then burned them. And bragged.

Rep. Shontel Brown exposed it on the House floor. This is erasure in real time.

📚ERASED exists because of this exact hate. They want our history gone.

Something Good in the World: Let’s Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day This Weekend

Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies.

Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.

I asked the one high ranking policeman I saw on 5th Ave why there were so few police. He said “We did not expect anything like this. Don’t tell anyone but I’ve only got 44 officers out here — and it’s a great crowd, great event, no incidents.”
I have never seen anything like this in NYC. 5th Ave covered from 42nd St well to the 20s. Nobody prepared for this volume. Volunteers are holding the traffic on all the side streets. No police in sight. #handsoff
