Don't be fooled by this op-ed in @theglobeandmail.com. Choice isn't between a "$75-billion funding injection...for Canada’s urban transit systems" (not on the table) + high-speed rail.

It's between clean, fast, frequent trains serving half Canada's population and even more pipelines, LNG + mining.
Opinion: High-speed rail is hardly the highest priority for Canada
Given its massive price tag and the natural limits on nation-building energy, there are more urgent issues to which Canada should devote its resources

It's gut-wrenching to see Zelenskyy standing next to that clown and putting on a brave face. He cares deeply about his country. Trump only cares about himself and exploiting others for his personal gain.
Michael McCay: When his aircraft landed at Halifax, Nova Scotia, President Zelenskyy was met by Prime Minister Mark Carney – the head of government of Canada.

When he landed at Miami, Florida, not a single U.S. official met Zelenskyy.

Canada is Ukraine's ally. The U.S. is Russia's proxy.

One of my brushes with fame... I recall being next to Jack Layton in a washroom lineup before a Billy Bragg performance in Ottawa. Jack said he was there to get his "Billy Bragg fix". It was a memorable concert in more ways than one.
Check out this incredible Christmas carol from Billy Bragg. Reminding us what the true story is - a refugee family escaping state violence and promising the gift of peace.

The best and most realistic take on the Epstein files I've seen.
It's too bad that a) I'm on a two-week use-it-or-lose-it year-end vacation and b) my squeamish Inquirer editors would never let me use this word anyway, so the world will never see my column...

Obviously, the game is rigged.
Did you know that the US hasn’t had an ambassador in Moscow in 6 months?

Or that our chief envoy to Russia won’t take briefings from the CIA?

But wait, there’s more. Much more in this 6-byline WSJ piece on the Witkoff-Putin axis.

Many of us live for that day... one small step for humanity.
My favorite tyrant joke: a man comes every day and peers at the front page of the newspaper without buying it.

The newspaper vendor says, "what are you looking for?"
"An obituary."
"Obituaries aren't on the front page."
"This one will be."

I sincerely hope a great reckoning is coming... soon.
The tech barons' alliance with Trump is working out great for them so far; they've gotten almost everything they want from this administration. But they may come to regret becoming part of the MAGA coalition.

My latest at Public Notice:

The tech industry will come to regret its embrace of Trump
For now, Silicon Valley is getting everything it wants. But a backlash is on its way.

Whenever I hear his name or see his face, I think "epic failure of public health". Not on the scale of the fiasco unfolding south of the border, of course, but much closer to home for us.

He could've added that Norway is the global leader in EV adoption with more than 90% of new vehicles this year being EVs. Meanwhile, Trump is hellbent on destroying the planet by discouraging renewable energy development, rolling back environmental protection, & accelerating fossil fuel extraction.

Remember, Trump is just a mindless mouthpiece for every special interest that owns the right. In this case the NRA. They write the talking points, he clumsily and mindlessly regurgitates them.
A mass shooting at my alma mater Brown University hit hard, proving no community is safe from senseless violence in a land with more guns than people

Trump added insult to injury by claiming there is "nothing you can do." We can do a lot about guns

My headquarters for awhile this morning after I finished shoveling snow with the wind chill north of -20°C. That's my Kobo e-reader with Ed Yong's excellent book An Immense World within. Alas, the sun never got close to full strength, and soon faded completely.

The ring of truth. Better to go from illness to illness than be seen trying to protect yourself and others.
Recent discourse has really cemented for me that many objections to mask wearing are rooted in an insecure kind of masculinity. Wearers seen as 'weak' or 'scared'. This idea is as absurd as calling a soldier weak or scared because he or she chooses to wear a Kevlar vest.

Brava! Tim Tierney and his ilk are the epitome of what is wrong with this city. The groundwork for this curse upon us was laid years ago by Mike Harris.
Councillor Tim Tierney is wrong about ‘Chronic No-Voters’ in his Ottawa Citizen Op/Ed on Saturday.
His opinion would be easier to take seriously if the comments weren’t coming from someone with a 15-year track record of being a reliable yes-man for every budget. 1/21
