When we refuse to see the image of God in others, we prepare our hearts for violence. Racism and genocide begin not with weapons, but with a failure to love.

Conflict among early Quakers tended to emerge around issues of religious authority, because, if everyone has Christ as their inward teacher, how could one individual or group tell others what to do?

In 1961, James Baldwin linked Truth/Love or, as he called it, God, with what Quakers call a Lamb’s War: “To be with God is really to be involved with some enormous, overwhelming desire, and joy, and power which you cannot control, which controls you..."

I can't put into words the feeling of watching our government, a hive of evil antisocial filth, the absolute worst humanity has to offer, colliding with the best. Ordinary people trying to help each other, risking everything to stand up for what's plainly, unambiguously fair and right. It's unreal

Gavin Newsom just announced that California will be the first state to join the World Health Organization.

This is in direct defiance of Donald Trump, who just pulled the United States out of the organization.

I know I am calling on the strength of all my Quaker ancestors

Who stood against the imposition of a state church

Who refused to take their hats off to state authority.

Who refused oaths and pledges to oppressive nations

Who abandoned pacifism to fight for the freedom of enslaved people
i am SO looking forward to this community discussion

there's a reason that talking to the dead became one of the first things the Church + State nixed! there's POWER in our relationships with the dead, esp #inthesetimes when everything is shifting under our feet...

i would love to see you there!
our current dominant culture denies the reality of death as a wholly natural part of life and obscures and minimizes our relationships with the dead

Because the Quaker movement emerged out of an earlier time of profound crisis and upheaval and is in essence an end-time spirituality, it might still have something crucial to offer a humanity faced with such significant existential threats.

#Friends, the Lectio Divina program based on H Thurman's The Great Incarnate Word is a source of hope and inspiration. Words written 80 years ago are still relevant to those "whose backs are against the wall" today. And Thurman was spiritual mentor to MLK Jr. whose day of celebration is coming up.
