Jake Kilrain, John L. Sullivan, Jem Smith, pictured on the cover of the The Illustrated Police News, this week in 1887.

All three top US and English boxers of the 1880s had one or both parents from Ireland, as did 1880s World Middleweight Champ, 'Nonpareil' Jack Dempsey, who was born there.

Jack Dempsey was born John Kelly. The second Jack Dempsey was Bernie Dempsey and named himself after Jack to box. The third Jack Dempsey - William Dempsey - was Bernie's brother, stood in for him and took the name. Thus, no boxers called Jack Dempsey were ever called Jack Dempsey. Good fact, that.

The Fat Cat was always one of those pubs that was on "the list", but I never expected to visit. I'm so glad I got the chance to finally tick it off with this visit for @pelliclemag.com. This is my fourth feature with @fred-gs.bsky.social and it's a personal one. Please read and enjoy.

Christmas is not the 'most wonderful time of the year' for many people. I wanted to take some time to explore what hospitality venues are doing to combat loneliness at this vulnerable time and drop them all into a handy directory on my blog.

For the last in our November-long series of pieces on pubs and pub culture, @fred-gs.bsky.social visits The Fat Cat in Norwich, a pub that's close to his heart for many reasons. We hope you enjoy this beautiful salutation of an all-time great.

Well, if it’s 26 November, it must be the 139th anniversary of a divorce case so saucy and notorious it gave us the phrase “what the butler saw”, and newspapers suppressed some of the details of the domestic servant in question’s testimony because it was “unfit for publication”

A true side note: Prince cared deeply about food insecurity, and would routinely make substantial donations to local food banks and community kitchens in every town that he would play in during his later tours. Sometimes they would ask for supplies & his team would show up with huge amounts of food.
A potato has been named after Prince.
