Worth noting that the first real turning point here was probably 2008, when the Thatcher/Reagan neolib consensus totally exploded. The totality of the effort of the political establishment since then has been dedicated to pretending this hasn't happened and things can carry on as before.
Again, all of this was easily avoidable: we could’ve turned from this path at any time. But lots of important people chose this version of Britain at every key decision point, because this is the future in which people like them can thrive and prosper, at everyone else’s expense.
