Fwiw, in fintech people tend to find it very obvious that you shouldn’t accidentally send 50000 EUR instead of 500 EUR, or let money disappear.

We currently find the equivalent harder to articulate for other types of software eg products, data or services that might affect the safety of others.
We as software practitioners (professionals who design/make software) need to learn from adjacent fields like medicine and engineering and consider potential harm to other humans as a basic criteria for our decision making. Hiding it behind abstractions like “customer impact” is cowardly.

I’m coming up to about my 70th flight since the start of 2024. Mix of budget and regular airlines.

Not once have I worn velour or cashmere “travel separates” or the colour oatmeal. Never had a sleep pillow. Nor yoga pants.

What are those magazine article writers *on*?!

It is now 0 days since I last saw a business document refer to people as resources.

People's time? A resource.
People themselves? Unless you're chopping them up and cooking them, not a resource.

now this has might have finally annoyed some billionaires, can we get the hell on with expanding Lisbon’s airport capacity? Would be lovely for a normal flight to leave on time occasionally.

Much like ChatGPT cannot think, Jira also does not do the work for you when you click on those buttons and drop downs. It just creates more to do alongside the work.

I have occasionally out manoeuvred colleagues used to one part of gov policy in one area by having had exposure to other sectors.

So… anywaysssss what has social care policy got to do with rail nationalisation? Weirdly, a lot.

Hob died about 3 months ago while in warranty. After about a month of threatening legal action, someone arrived, took it away and gave us a temporary hob. Then 2 months later, after threatening yet again, someone arrives to install a replacement. This is fairly normal for doing business here.

I believe there is a historical reason why this has happened in the uk & Ireland - I think it might have been to do with these sorts of restaurants in the 70s or 80s offering fish and chips as an alternative, but I might be making this up…
Quote posts split evenly between Irish and Scottish people applauding and bamboozled Americans apprehending "French fries" in Chinese food for the first time.

I LITERALLY JUST NEEDED TO STORE THE SCROLL POSITION SO THAT I CAN HAVE A BUTTON TO GO BACK TO THAT ARBITRARY SCROLL POSITION AFTER GOING TO A REFERENCE ANCHOR. WHY MUST I HATE NUMBERS NOW

We had a whole second summer of love in the uk in the late 80s with new genres of music generated after and a fantastic alternative comedy scene that we reaped the rewards through the 90s and 00s and beyond in popular culture because the dole could cover rent.
who creates the lively art and music scenes if the rent is too high? who makes cultural life? who serves you food or washes your dishes? who creates the fancy little restaurants that draw you to urban living? affordable housing is at the heart of what makes city life worthwhile.
