This is Not-Ship: a newsletter using data and visuals to navigate our turbulent world.

Everything is A LOT lately. It's all so uncertain. And the way I try to make sense of things is with data. So, that's what Not-Ship is all about. Come chart the chaos with me.

Folks, here's a link to my newsletter where I express my exasperation with LinkedIn.

Maybe we can get a critical mass of data viz people to agree to put in real effort to make BlueSky social work.

There's one day a year when nearly 6 billion people — almost three quarters of the global population — have a public holiday.
Do you know what it is?

It's crazy that the US has the nearly the same rate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people as India, Brazil and China. It does worse than Indonesia and Mexico. Wow!

Big new blogpost!

My guide to data visualization, which includes a very long table of contents, tons of charts, and more.

When was the last time you lingered? You know, just hanging about. No purpose. No urgency. No real desire to leave.

www.not-ship.com/we-dont-ling...
People don't linger like they used to. It's a problem.

As someone who believes runaway capitalism is one of the main ills of our time, Christmas gift giving requires some uncomfortable mental gymnastics. But I've found a way to feel a bit better about it.

Let me make the case for a B Corp Christmas.

An analysis of major US retailers found most items were discounted more often than sold at the 'regular' price.

In other words, the 'discount' is the real price, and the 'regular' price is just there to make you feel good about paying it. 🫣

today instead of buying barely discounted crap, get a paid subscription to an independent media outlet! a little $ goes a long way towards supporting a free press. 🗞️

drop links to your own or your faves in the replies so ppl can easily sign up (bonus if you add a couple words about why it’s good!):

🚨 If you're doing any Black Friday or Cyber Week shopping, watch out for the little crossed-out number beside the discounted price. 🚨

That little number will often deceive you into thinking you got a great deal! #blackfriday

Loving this new newsletter from the stellar @ashendruk.com, (and I don't only say this because she featured the first long-form feature we published on anxiety.eco ... Not-Ship is a really fresh read)
Also in this week's newsletter — my favourite things from elsewhere, featuring:

📉 Precarious UK data from @jamesrball.com
👠 AI slop in the fashion industry by @jdshadel.com
🎸 And a funky new music find: @cosmosheldrake.music-social.com

“They’re trying to turn 4” is critical here.

Paid subscribers keep a publication going.

Complaining about paid subscriptions is how all media becomes owned by Bezos, Andreessen, the Murdochs and the Ellisons
Court Watch is a totally indispensable source of important, interesting, bizarre court cases every week. I definitely feel as a paid subscriber I am supporting something that serves the public good. They're trying to turn 4; subscribe if you can www.courtwatch.news/p/help-us-tu...
