Just anecdotally every indie author I’ve worked with has paid as much and more than any publishing company for bespoke cover artwork and proceeded to make a killing just from marketing the hell out of their book with that cover art and they then did not have to share a single dime with a publisher
And authors, for the love of god, DON'T use them for your book covers.
Don't use AI images. Don't use them for your pfp. Don't use them for your banner. Don't use them for memes.
