If you asked me, “what kind of work do you think Brett Ratner is able to find these days?” I’d probably crack some joke like, “I don’t know, making PR movies for Melania Trump?” so yeah, no big surprise.
Melania has a documentary — and to nobody's surprise, it's backed by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos and directed by serial abuser Brett Ratner. In this week's American Freakshow, @ninaburleigh.bsky.social takes a deep dive into the bizarre project and Melania herself.

What's remarkable is not just that Trump is so loathsome and narcissistic that he doesn't care when an innocent woman is killed in a protest unless and until he finds out that her dad was a fan of his ... it's that he's so disregulated he *can't help but say so out loud*.
Trump: "ICE is gonna be too rough with somebody. They're gonna make a mistake sometimes. I felt horribly when I was told the young woman had the tragedy. But when I learned her father is - I hope he still is, but I don't know - was a tremendous Trump fan. It's terrible. It's so sad. It just happens"

Hi journalists. This is not a 'crackdown', a word that means strict punishment of illegal behavior.

The term is mass exclusion.

The US Administration's policy is mass exclusion of people it deems undesirable: native birthright citizens of immigrants, and half of all people immigrating lawfully.

Kinda funny that Trump thinks "asylum" means other countries send people from insane asylums, and a) this is real life, not a ham-handed Idiocracy-type satire, b) he has surely been corrected several times but is incapable of updating his priors, & c) most media politely agree not to mention it.

I would be hard-pressed to name a more feckless, embarrassing political body in history than the Senate Democratic caucus. Just utterly useless in this moment.
“Give us a chance to give [Trump] a way out of this that comes to the right ending. … I don’t know if that’s possible.” - @durbin.senate.gov to Danes in Europe.

Can the Senate Dems sound any more limp, facile and impotent to Europeans across the Atlantic?

Not headline news. No real fuss by Democratic leaders. No calls to censure. No pushback. No questions asked of GOP leadership by the press.

Just totally accepted anti-Muslim bigotry across the board.

How is Adam Jentleson’s strategy here meaningfully different than what Keir Starmer has tried in the UK to historically abysmal poll results?
This isn't a left-right ideological issue. But it blows me away that anyone who is actually anti-Trump would think running back Joe Biden/Merrick Garland 2.0 will work the second time. No political party can tolerate a very large, armed secret police force committed to murdering its voters.

Can’t improve things by perpetuating the lie that immigrants are a threat. Have to take on that lie directly, siding with the pro-immigration American majority.

“But if we get rid of ICE, who will stop the rampaging hordes of scary foreigners?” isn’t good politics. It’s ceding the issue to liars.

This is such a great demonstration of how Democratic leadership has become the proverbial frog in boiling water, oblivious to just how extreme things have become. The president is threatening to go to war with *NATO*. And Dems just plug it into their kitchen table messaging machine.
“we might go to war with Europe over Greenland” is not normal behavior and cannot be slotted into normal political rhetoric by people who would like to reestablish normal political relations with Europe someday
i feel like Americans don't get the level of eye-rolling this is getting from Europe

Please don’t bring your imaginary friends into this. We’re already dealing with a president who is fucking bonkers.

Multi-layered “look what you made me do” lie.

Because Norway didn’t give a him prize (it doesn’t decide winners) for ending wars (he didn’t end) the US won’t be peaceful anymore (bombing multiple countries) and will take Greenland (part of Denmark, not Norway) to stop Russia (it’d help Russia).

Every mainstream news outlet will still talk about “taking Greenland” like the result of some rational policy calculus, even if a big mistake. Meanwhile anyone with senses can tell it’s the act of an unhinged monster. Like the omnipotent child sending family to the cornfield in the Twilight Zone.

If Dems win with current leadership, as is likely given material conditions, they will claim vindication for their cowardly ideas and approach. And they will be further emboldened to acquiesce to Trump’s most violent and fascistic moves. Even if we win, we are likely to lose. We are in real danger.
Schumer and Jeffries must step down from leadership if we have any hope to reform this country.

They are all part of the same club. They work for the corporate donors and all they want is restoration.

They won't fight b/c it's not in their interest.

It's so clear and yet still...

The incredibly lukewarm Democratic response on Greenland is being noticed in Europe, incidentally.

Chuck Schumer not finding a stronger word than “quixotic” for Trump’s plan to seize Greenland has been name checked to me more than once.
But Americans who want to save the alliance with Europe must have no illusions about how bad a condition this transatlantic partnership is in.

It may be that Americans (and especially their leaders) have known the comfort of peace for so long that almost nothing could provoke them into appropriately fight fascism and war. Entry into WW2 took a lot, but the U.S. might have shaken off even Pearl Harbor if these people had been in charge.
Even Neville Chamberlain had the guts in him to form a war cabinet
NEW: In this interview, Chuck Schumer describes the "five buckets" Dems think are key to their possibly winning a Senate majority in 2026: housing, "the high price of food [and] food monopolies playing a major role there," electricity, "the high cost of childcare," and health care.

ICE is seriously going to be Gaza all over again for Democrats isn’t it. They’re going to try it again, insisting if they just don’t talk about it then it’s not actually an issue that matters to millions of voters.

Chuck Schumer now sees a path back to the majority. Can he manage his way through it?

I like Bernie Sanders and would have much preferred him to our last three nominees. But he’s human, and like almost all of our leaders, far past retirement age. Even a great politician won’t be suited for every time period, and as this kind of post shows, he is not the man for the moment.
