Major airlines, including American Airlines, United, and Delta, are selling access to five billion plane ticketing records to the government for warrantless searching and monitoring of peoples’ movements, including by the FBI, Secret Service, ICE.

One thing that’s different now is there’s virtually no shared foundation of reality, at least not online.

And that’s largely purposeful.

It’s all a bunch of engines to produce emotional reactivity, and we’re all parts of those engines—consciously or not—while also being subjected to their effects.

I've worked on the far-right beat for nearly 10 years now, and I've had to handle sorting through a lot of misinformation on politically motivated violence. And this is by far the worst instance of it, including from a lot of people who should really know better.

Currently zero direct evidence the shooter was a groyper™, but it seems that won't matter, the conceptual reality of this event will squarely fall along partisan/politics lines

I don’t know man. Something about the fact young guys spend so much time gaming and indoors getting irony poisoned to the fact they write video game memes on bullet casings makes me think we got a problem with aimless young men in society.

I do not care how much this annoys people on this website: there is no evidence (yet) that this guy was a groyper. Yes, there are similarities and shared DNA between groypers and the nihilistic brainrotted gaming circles this guy likely came from, but they are not the same thing.
Charlie Kirk’s shooter was a 22 year old white cis man & 4chan groyper.

Charlie Kirk’s last words were “gang violence”. he was claiming Black people were inherently violent right before his life was ended by another white man.

Here is a description of Kirk’s terrorism by one of his many victims:

@livagar.bsky.social is on Twitch right now talking about the Kirk shooters motivations, and she understands this shit better than 99% of people here, and is pouring cold water on the “definitely a groyper” theory. She is making a lot of sense.

The one time we got the smoking gun of undeniable ideology that mapped neatly onto american partisanship in political violence was J6, and we decided it was too scary to treat it as such, so now we return to deciphering memes of school shooters like medieval peasants panicking at an eclipse.

New from @tinanguyen.bsky.social and me: Charlie Kirk's shooter left behind bullet casings with a furry sex meme and a bunch of Helldivers video game references. Subreddits for Helldivers immediately picked up on it.

The suspected shooter left a hodgepodge of extremely online taunts.

it's definitely redolent of that broader cultural milieu, but way too random and irony-layered to tie to any kind of specific political goal or meaningful ideological framework

Compare the tone, quantity and duration of the response to the shooting of Charlie Kirk with the response to the horrific murder of thousands of young children in Gaza.

As for those warning that Trump will use this to clamp down, he will do so to precisely the extent that centrists enable him to.
We have a bit of a natural experiment here. Compare the tone, quantity and duration of Charlie Kirk coverage with that of the two Dem lawmakers gunned down in their homes in Minnesota 6 months ago. May be revealing.

Vance Boelter, a Trump, GOP voting Christian nationalist, was radicalized in part by QAnon, the same conspiracy promoted by Trump and Republicans, even though they knew it had radicalized others to commit violence.

Boelter had a hit list of 70 liberals. He killed Melissa Hortmann and her husband.

Utah was the first state to allow open carry on campus. A would-be assailant could walk right onto campus armed as they please and nobody could’ve done a thing about it.
In 2014, Anita Sarkeesian canceled an event at Utah State after a credible assassination threat because the school’s response was that Utah allows guns on college campuses.

People have warned about this kind of violence for years. But they weren’t the people the powers at be wanted to protect.
