Hyper enthusiast, price-insensitive players are really keeping things going, especially in the non f2p gaming space.

According to Circana's Q3 2025 Future of Games, only 4% of US video game players buy a new game more often than once per month, with a third of players not buying any games at all.

As time is relative, the year as the individual experiences it is unique. And since only that individual existed in that particular year, this statement is, by nature, impossible to not be true. There are infinite GOTYs delivered by infinite consciences across an infinite universe. And beyond.
Today I'm holding myself in the light by unilaterally declaring that my favorite games I've played this year (even if not released this year) are all GOTY and no individual or group can convince me otherwise.

One of the things that has me curious given the rush to cancel Game Pass is about how significant the attrition rate was expected internally at MS.

Any time you change a service offering or increase pricing, there is an expectation you'll price out some of your customers.

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

I hope everyone knows that it's very easy for any social content platform, including Bluesky, to be a misery machine and that if you aren't intentional about it, they will absolutely decrease the positive impact you have on the world while making you less happy.

Skepticism is always healthy, but I've been keeping tabs on this for years (since my big 2018 story about Red Dead 2's crunch). They certainly haven't eliminated *all* overtime but everyone I've talked to at Rockstar says it's night and day from previous projects. If that changes, I'll report on it.
Frankly I do not buy for a second that Rockstar is trying to avoid crunch
Nobody I’ve talked to at Rockstar has believed Fall 2025 was a real window for a very long time now. Too much work, not enough time, and what appears to be a real desire from management to avoid brutal crunch. GTA VI slipping to 2026 has seemed inevitable for months if not longer

I think the suggestion that any kind of human-to-human interaction should be replaced with human-to-chatbot interaction should be scrutinized as a kind of moral rot. It’s antisocial ideology and should be treated as such

GTA 6 getting pushed does not mean there will all of a sudden be a whole bunch of dollars available for other games in 2025.

It just means that a bunch of the dollars that would have been spent on gaming this year have disappeared.

Getting a job in games media seemed almost unattainable when I broke in back in 2005. In the years since, it’s become almost impossible and ultimately inadvisable. I can’t imagine trying to break in today.

Independent is pretty much the only option now. Support your favorite creators directly.

A lot of conservative men would burn the entire world down if it meant getting women out of the workforce because their entire sense of self is based on the idea that they were born superior to women

The ideas around “neutrality” and “bias” have done so much damage in the mainstream media. These ideas only work in one direction—against the left—and result in people in the industry who personally identify as left-leaning overcompensating and doing the right’s work for them

Not terribly surprised to see a 90 day pause on tariffs (base 10% still in effect and China specific tariffs still active).

The 10% baseline is still, arguably, an incredibly dumb thing to do, but catastrophe has been avoided for at least 90 days.

I assume China and the US will work something out

The problem with most machine-based random number generators is that they’re not TRULY random, so if you need genuine randomness it is sometimes necessary to link your code to an external random process like a physical noise source or the current rate of US tariffs on a given country.

Relatedly, I have a feeling the “tech CEOs don’t let their kids see screens” stuff is not true. I think it’s propaganda to make them seem more elite and drive pro-internet censorship campaigns

If you don’t allow your kids to have internet access until they’re like 16 and then just give them a phone they’re likely going to get scammed and abused immediately. This already happens. Kids need to be actively taught digital *literacy* from a young age, that’s the problem

These guys are told from the day they are born that vulnerability is feminine, so they dedicate themselves to being (or at least appearing) invulnerable, complete unto themselves, but of course that's profoundly anti-human, so what results is a bunch of weird dysfunctional behaviors.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.
