Timezones are so weird. Australia is in 2026, Canada is in 2025, and the United States is in 1939.

Well, that was a year, wasn't it? Lots of political bullshit in the United States; I knew it was going to be bad, but the degree of badness still managed to surprise me. (And here I thought I was cynical!) Lots of institutional industry bullshit (I don't have much remaining faith in…

My short story "Matches" appears in the first issue of Ashton House Magazine. The print publication aims to include many genres of pulp. My near-future P.I. story aims to hit at least a couple of those genres and sits alongside some recognizable names from last century. "Matches" is my angry-at-the-adoption-industry story. Angry at plenty of other things, too, but for this one adoption was at the core.

I'm going to try paper making this year. Maybe also dying yarn (that's been on my possible fun activity list for a few years).
okay let's do a thread of FUN ONLY, no-stress, low-stakes New Year's Resolutions that are designed not to make you become a Better™️ Person™️ but purely to increase the amount of happiness in your life in 2026

I'm going to learn Polish folk embroidery and I want to DM at least a one-shot of something

If you're wondering whether the "open letter about AI" on file 770 is worth reading and engaging, it is not. The whole thing is rhetorical mush so it was no surprise when I got to the end and she admitted "her" letter was itself written by AI. Useless bait.

Cover reveal for Animal Noir, a 2026 anthology I'm in (the hedgehog's my girl). The editor talks a bit about how it came together, how she designed the cover, and good stuff like that.
There are anthropomorphic animals, so today will be good

Yes. This is an existential industry issue and the preparation behind a policy (as well as the method of releasing the policy) needed to be thorough, considered, and careful.
All this tells me is that SFWA leadership really bungled everything by wading into this unprepared, conflated tons of different issues, and made everyone unhappy. Not a great look. 😭

This is an excellent point about SFWA's ongoing survey. (But please do yell at the board.)

Also worth noting: I used to serve on a committee and getting a survey designed and vetted prior to sharing it with membership was a whole thing that took more than a couple of days.
December 23, 2025 at 4:43 PM
After the board's (thankfully brief) embrace of AI slop, SFWA is now asking for public feedback on the subject. If you're so inclined, please take a minute to tell this writers' organization that it should support writers.
SFWA members and general SFF community:

In this press release, our Board of Directors apologizes for recent events.

Feedback from writers is strongly welcomed in the survey.

SFWA Members: Write to office@sfwa.org to support our Emerging Tech Committee.

Amused that @sfwa.org though a Friday news drop wouldn't get noticed. We're nerd-ass writers and most of us have wi-fi and nothing better to do than gripe online while ignoring our WIP.

seem to recall aid to palestinian writers being so strangely sensitive that it required discussion and votes whether to have votes to even consider rule changes to descriptions of political activity. guarantee if LLMs had a fraction of that discussion this wouldn't have even gotten to proposed text.

The email I just sent SFWA’s board
Earlier today, SFWA made two announcements about the upcoming Nebula Awards. The first included this wording: Works that used LLMs at any point during the writing process must disclose this upon acceptance of the nomination, and the nature of the technology’s use will be made clear to voters on the final ballot. Needless to say, this is a Choice, coming from an organization for writers, many of whom are currently part of the Anthropic class action lawsuit.

Oh, now SFWA's backtracked on the Nebula rule changes. Right decision...but it should not have been a necessary decision since somebody(ies) at the org still felt AI slop was appropriate for the Nebula ballot. Somebody(ies) need to resign.
December 19, 2025 at 9:55 PM
This is an incredibly disappointing decision.
Another Nebula Awards nomination cycle is in full swing, and the addition of poetry and comics, along with the presence of LLMs in industry, required careful consideration.

Read on, and vote well!

We trust our voters & look forward to what they choose to celebrate.
