Researching the Internet is serious business. Mostly.

(We're mainly over on AoIR.social, our organisation Mastodon instance, which is open to all members.)

We're still mostly over at @AoIR@aoir.social (did we mention the Association of Internet Researchers has its own Mastodon instance any AoIR member can use?), but we're delighted BlueSky is providing an alternative to that *cough* other platform.

Waves to lots of new friends!

After six years on the @aoir.bsky.social Exec Committee, I logged out of AoIR’s Insta acct yesterday, my very last task for the Exec. AoIR has been my core academic community for a long time, & the end of my time on the Exec has provoked some thoughts & feelings: www.tamaleaver.net/2025/11/05/r...
Reflecting on Six Years on the AoIR Executive Committee (Some Thoughts and Feels)
Last month at the Association of Internet Researcher’s (AoIR’s) annual conference—held for the first time in Latin American, namely in Niterói, Brazil—my time on Executive Committee came to an end …

If you are coming to #Aoir2025 you ll prove coxinha in our lunch (and also the vegan version with carrots)
It’s the Sete de Setembro – Brazil’s Independence Day – so it is only right that Coxinha, the emblematically Brazilian chicken croquette, is #RecipeOfTheDay! These, though, are mini versions, much more manageable for making at home. www.nigella.com/recipes/coxi...
Coxinha
Although a regular coxinha is more the size and shape of a bulbous, dumpy pear, these are mini versions, like fat little figs, and you can get a fabulous 70 of these emblematically Brazilian chicken...

Are you attending #AoIR2025 @aoir.bsky.social in Brazil? Are you an early-career scholar? Then maybe you'd like to help me coordinate and organize the face-to-face early-career workshop!

Reach out if you are interested or if you know anybody who might be the right fit.

Many thanks to @aoir.bsky.social & @zemki.bsky.social for the opportunity to share my research on the UN’s Global Digital Compact at the #AoIR2025Symposium. I discussed how its approach to data flows/AI governance reflects data colonialism and sidelines Global South calls for digital sovereignty.

Proud to be part of the @aoir.bsky.social important conversation at the Flashpoint symposium. Asked to reflect on the concept of “platform governance” in 2025. In a nutshell, platform governance is, in my opinion, a pro-firm framing that has supported lack of regulation for the past 15-20 years.
We are hosting the 2025 @aoir.bsky.social Flashpoint Symposium in Bremen!

This is such an important guide for researchers who deal with risky topics. So many universities do not have the will, knowledge, or tools to deal with escalating situations that come from risky research, I know because I received no support or guidance. So well done, @aoir.bsky.social, for this 👏
We are delighted to share the publication of Risky Research: An AoIR Guide to Researcher Protection and Safety, the culmination of over two years of collaborative effort by the AoIR Risky Research Working Group.
