I would like to make a little thread/sloppy directory, here: If you write about books for any outlet (by which I mean not a newsletter, somewhere that you have an editor), please reply and tell me what you cover and where?

Absolutely not trying to make the terrible news of the closure of Washington Post's Books coverage about me or anything, but I cannot stress how bad this is for books. The biggest divide between Big 5 and independent/nonprofit press books is not quality--it's the marketing spend.

I had so much fun writing this one, and working with @danhartland.bsky.social is always a delight!

Wednesday's review at SH is from @anushreenande.bsky.social, who reads Travis Baldree's Brigands & Breadknives and asks: can cosy fiction "rais[e] the question of what happens when those once cherished elements—that comfortable, cozy life—start to feel stifling"?

Wish there was as much talk about City's 115 charges as there is about Arsenal being better at corners than other teams

A friend of mine, Matthew Barry, asked me to reflect and write on what's been going on in the Twin Cities, and how it intersects with the football culture I'm a part of here.

So I did that.

Here it is, for #HeartOfAFan.

We can be excited for Ethan having a good start to life in France without using it as some kind of evidence Arsenal have handled this wrong. He's playing which is good for him & us. We are top of every competition & looking to win trophies which is also good.
It's. all. good.

Weird feeling that our lead at the top of the table has been extended, but also frustration missed a real opportunity.

We just didn't do enough in the second half, Saka and Merino chances were about all we had, and they weren't exactly clear cut.

Forest made it tough, but Arsenal fell well short

A massive loss for Arsenal - the end of an era.

When you consider everything he's had to contend with in the last 8 years - departures at every level of the club, a pandemic, Brexit-rule changes - he's brought incredible stability to the Academy.

Big f*cking shoes to fill. Proper send-off needed.

So happy for Nelli - perfect response to all the *waves around* nonsense narratives being flung about. First senior hattrick!

Gyokeres now looks like Havertz did before he found his feet and some form.

He needs something to go for him, to seed his confidence and belief.

He can be important to us, but he needs wind in his sails.

Contrast it to the very sensible and mature response by Slott (much respect) who I am sure the media were hoping for more fuel to this fire from.
Neville’s reaction to the Martinelli incident is a classic case of being immersed in the online rage machine for too long and losing sight of how normal people actually think and communicate. He’s fully lost to the clickbait, troll-culture of social media.
