Hi new followers! I work on medieval literature, fanfiction, the history of reading and rewriting, adaptation, reception, medievalism, and queer theory. I'm currently writing a book about medieval writers who were fannish and their modern fandoms. #medievalsky

In an ideal world, the next Director General of the BBC would scrap the BBC's dedicated News channel, replace all of BBC News's political correspondents, and commission a load of new scripted drama and comedy along with a set of brand new music-orientated shows.-

I've been promoted to Associate Professor! (this is not tenure at Harvard, which tenures at full.) Yay!

Congratulations New York!
This morning I overheard my 5 (nearly 6) year old child reading aloud to himself an I Can Read book about the Green Lantern with such a reverential tone, and it was so magical. Reading is incredible and now he can access all the absurd superhero lore in the world, and I'm so happy for him.

Recommending David Townsend's The Ram in the Thicket. A really well written, rich historical novel about Julian of Norwich, in and out of the world, watching a threat to her family loom when Margery Kempe comes to town and lights a fire... it's really good.

Your challenge for this weekend is to put in an abstract for Queer Bibliography 2026. It's what all the cool kids are doing.

Calling English a 'rip-off degree' is one of the most blatant exhibitions of personal barbarism I've ever seen. You've demonstrated nothing but the poverty of your own mind.

What does it mean to love in a time of turmoil, and what can the premodern world teach us about this? How do we negotiate loving a being, a nation, a profession that fails to love us back?

#Pamela this book's attitude to marriage is so inconsistent and bizarre. I don't know why this shocked me the most so far, but Pamela agreeing that Mr B should "give Mrs Jewkes to John" and mandate between his servants a clearly unsuitable marriage really got me. It's so immoral and heartless.

Pamela update: volume 2 makes the bold choice to have zero action and to spend pages and pages of Pamela and B harping on about her condition, virtue, clothes, and wedding date, while occasionally a Foreboding appears. It's so boring, but the hope remains that something bad will happen.

I'm now reading Pamela with a sort of queasy horror. Mr B just read her poem about being imprisoned by him to the ladies in their company to great applause.

When I’m accused of “technopessimism“ I counter that I’m not “pessimistic about technology“; I am opposed to the economic, political, and social project of upward wealth transfer that “AI” is being leveraged to bring about. If that phrasing is useful to others, then go ahead and use it.
