After receiving a dusting of snow the distant mountains are surrounded by blue sky and light clouds above. This is reflected in the still waterway below all surrounded with the browns and golds of the grasses.

Red sunsets are caused by Rayleigh scattering, where low-angle sunlight travels through more of the Earth’s atmosphere, scattering shorter blue/violet wavelengths and allowing longer red/orange wavelengths to pass through to the eye. Particulates and dust in the air further enhance this effect, often indicating dry, high-pressure weather, summarized by the saying "red sky at night, sailor's delight". Een fijne avond alvast.

Vättern 🇸🇪
Eine ruhige, winterliche Uferlandschaft an einem weiten See unter einem blassen, bewölkten Himmel. Im Mittelgrund erstreckt sich eine schmale, schneebedeckte Steinmole ins klare Wasser, auf der drei kahle, knorrige Bäume wachsen, die sich deutlich zur Seite neigen. Ihre filigranen Äste spiegeln sich fast perfekt auf der glatten Wasseroberfläche. Am unteren Bildrand und entlang des Ufers säumen Eisplatten und Schnee das seichte, transparente Wasser, durch das man die Kieselsteine am Grund erkennen kann. Die Szenerie wirkt still, kühl und friedlich.

"The thought before flight" - finished my white-faced heron at the Hutt Estuary. I ended up lengthening the beak - the trade-off with painting freehand rather than tracing a reference: more freedom, but occasionally some wonky proportions. Oil on stretched canvas.
