If you're in the UK, my science-fiction novella "The Warrior Within" is currently £3.99 on Kindle. A bargain for a taut little tale about femicidal mercenaries, posthuman aristocrats, tidal locking, and a man who can never be alone (no matter how much he wants to be).

I'm delighted that Mamdani won, but I'm just sorry that Dick Cheney didn't live to see it.

"If the sandwich didn't split, you must acquit!"
The defense team presses Lairmore on whether the sandwich really 'exploded.' They return to the photo of the sandwich and wrapper on the ground.

"That sandwich hasn't exploded at all, has it?" defense asks.

"It looks like a little bit is coming out towards the bottom," Lairmore replies.

“<name-of-company>: yesterday’s technology, tomorrow!”

If I were a roboticist and Rodney Brooks took time out of his day to tell me my robot sucked, I'd probably give up robotics altogether and go retrain as a florist or something.

This isn't a prediction or a recommendation, but I'd just like to point out that the last autocratic ruler who got both Luke Skywalker AND Han Solo mad at him got hurled into the reactor shaft of a space station that then blew up.

He's lucky Carrie Fisher isn't alive. She'd probably make it happen.

The ebook of my debut novella, "The Warrior Within", is $0.50 at Amazon. I don't think it's ever been on sale before.

If you like far-future sci-fi with tidally-locked worlds, mysterious ruined cities, and a hero who just wants to be left alone, this might be the book for you.

Surprise anthology release today!
Scott's planet is a shared world anthology about a colony abandoned on a world still in its Carboniferous period. That means giant bugs, no real trees, and a lot of wacky biology to play with.

Alan Garner is 91 today. A brilliant and unique author. His books have inspired and enchanted me since I read The Weirdstone of Brisingamen at the age of 11. Here is my treasured copy of Red Shift. The Le Guin quote on the cover is wholly accurate.

Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig no graves. Instead, lure your enemy into a catacomb, then immure him.

INGREDIENTS
1 catacomb
stones
mortar (pre-mixed)
cask of Amontillado (fictitious)

NOTES
Practice your masonry skills. You will need to be able to work quickly.

Serve cold.
Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig no graves. Save your strength! Make your enemy do it. Tell him it’s going to be a swimming pool & you’ll pay him above minimum wage & let his family come over to swim anytime they want if he’ll help with excavation.
Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. One for practice and the other one is the "main" grave.

It's Caturday, and time to renew my #ProofOfCat.

This is Frankie, who we fostered earlier this summer, and who has now joined the household. I have decided that he is a member of the Lumpenpurrletariat, because when I woke up this morning there was a purring lump in the bed with me.

It turns out that all those humans in their pods in "The Matrix" weren't actually functioning as living batteries, they were just a slave army kept busy identifying crosswalks and motorcycles and manually tagging offensive content so that the world of the machines could keep working.
"“AI isn’t magic; it’s a pyramid scheme of human labor,” said @adiod.bsky.social , a researcher at the Distributed AI Research Institute based in Bremen, Germany. “These raters are the middle rung: invisible, essential and expendable.”

"There Is No Antimemetics Division" is outstanding: smart, weird & unsettling. I read it a few years back (OR DID I?) when it was, I think, self-pubbed. I was very impressed.

As I understand it, this is a new incarnation, heavily-revised & pro-published. I'll be pre-ordering to see what's new.
