For those of you who just came here from my mastodon/mathstodon on the promise of ephemeral stuff such as food and pants: I just had breakfast (cereal, yogurt, and a banana, all mixed together, and a cup of tea) and I’m wearing a skirt.

It's the seventh day of Christmas! Have some more birds. This time there is some twitter drama between dark-eyed juncos and chickadees.

It’s the sixth day of Christmas! Have another bird. It’s a common starling, but it’s probably not named for the fact that much of its plumage looks like bright stars against a dark sky! In fact, ‘starling’ is probably cognate with another bird, ‘tern’.

I had no idea they looked like that. Neat!

Scheduled a callback from my Austrian phone company in the hopes I wouldn't have to wait on hold, have now been waiting 40 minutes on hold. 😔 I hope receiving this call while outside Austria doesn't use up my international minutes. Good thing it's apparently also possible to end my contract by post.

It’s the fifth day of Christmas! There is some debate over whether the gifts on this day were actually birds. Anyway, have a squirrel’s ring.

It’s the fourth day of Christmas! Have some more birds. (Two or three different Steller’s jays, a dark-eyed junco, and a golden-crowned sparrow)
December 28, 2025 at 8:40 AM
It’s the third day of Christmas! Have some birds (a suspected house finch and a dark-eyed junco). I know you might have been expecting six birds today, but I’m not made of birds, you know.

It’s the second day of Christmas! Have three birds of two different species (dark-eyed juncos and I think a chickadee) It might be the same junco twice; I haven’t had time to look for one that definitely has two.

It’s the first day of Christmas. Have a bird. (I think this one is a golden-crowned sparrow.)

I just completed "Printing Department" - Day 4 - Advent of Code 2025 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2025/day/4

I know there'll be a day when I need to seriously optimise the code to do part 2 in a reasonable time, but this wasn't that day.

Foods from other countries I’ve lived in that I’ve made or helped make in the USA:
🇳🇿New Zealand: Pavlova
🇨🇭Switzerland (actually from neighbouring France, but I lived in Switzerland when I had it): Tartiflette (we have this often for dinner, with Brie instead of Reblochon)
🇦🇹Austria: Vanillekipferl

I just completed "Gift Shop" - Day 2 - Advent of Code 2025 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2025/day/2

I spent some time thinking it wasn't working the right way because the log buffer wasn't big enough to have what I was expecting to see, but then I tried the final result and it was right. 😂

Things that are surprisingly hard to find in countries I’ve lived in:
Switzerland: Fake moustaches — couldn’t find them anywhere! 🤷🏻‍♀️
Austria: Puffed rice cereal — I had to use what I’d brought from Switzerland to make Rice Krispie treats.
USA: Yoghurt that isn’t super thick (so I buy kefir instead.)

I just completed "Secret Entrance" - Day 1 - Advent of Code 2025 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2025/day/1

In the brief snatches of time I've had to work on this, I kept getting part 2 wrong and reworking it, before eventually realising I'd forgotten to add it to the number from part 1 🤦🏻‍♀️

Man,game 7 of the 2013 series, when the Bostoo Yook Yarters walked it off in the 57th inning against Chicago City was something I will never forget.

And I say that as a Logeeles Dodgers fan for LIFE.
