Neo-Northumbrian. Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline.

Harmonist. Bad guitarist.
Midnight Baker. Hill walker.
Cricket lover. Company grower.
Bird noticer. Wine hoarder.

Shameless with my bonhomie.
Glasshouse in Gateshead yesterday. Tom Borrow wearing his young fingers to stumps for the first Tchaikovsky piano concerto was fine.

But Shostakovich symphony 10 with @royalphilorchestra.bsky.social under Vasily Petrenko was an absolute thrill. Long time since I’ve seen any music quite so moving.

I’m at that point of Super Bowl thinking where I know I shouldn’t. But probably will, knowing that I’ll go to bed at 6-3 on a game that turns out to be an all time classic.

Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

‘Of course, we don’t actually have a budget for it.‘
Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

"Don't use gerunds in headlines and crossheads, for the love of God."
Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.

“Would you say more about what’s worrying you here?”

From a fan’s point of view, I’m delighted to see the Fulham goal disallowed. But VAR is an absolute blight on the game.

‘Everything you know and love is on that dot’.’
This is an up-close photo of Saturn's rings, but it also shows so much more. Those two little dots are actually the Earth and Moon as seen from over 1.4 billion kilometers away by the Cassini spacecraft. Everything you know and love is on that dot.

Friday night's whisky spoke to me and said, 'don't ever do that again'.

I will be doing it again tonight.
Burns night is fabulous isn't it. I mean a properly enjoyable celebration of a country's identity and culture and done with so much love - so different to the empty nationalism of the 'raise the colours mob'. And no it's not just last night's whisky talking.... (we celebrated early)

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

Pick up the nearest book. Turn to page 42 and post the second sentence.

'This last factor, which was not directly investigated, may have been responsible for the scattering of males throughout the entire orchard after the male population rapidly and drastically increased in October.'

'Still, despite the obvious advantage of combining distributional, telemetry, and tracer data sets, empirical and statistical studies that do so remain rare in the literature.’

'Like every other child born precisely eleven years ago on the last Eventide, when the clock struck midnight she would die - the eleven short years of her doomed life complete; her curse finally fulfilled.'

We have an unseasonable visitor in our living room. Has appeared certainly dead at least twice during today but is now drunkenly fly-staggering around the room.

Following coverage over the weekend of Sir Paul Nurse's comments that suggested that the only reason that a Fellow should be expelled from @royalsociety.org is scientific misconduct, I have written to him to explain the risks such an attitude poses of increasing sexual harassment in STEM.

Newton was no angel. Nonetheless, it's a bit much to equate him with someone knowingly distributing CSAM and trying to foment racial civil war.

I'm not sure throwing Newton under the bus is the best way to defend the Royal Society.....
"I think it is naive, frankly, to say that we should get rid of him because he’s a bad person," the new UK Royal Society president says of Elon Musk's membership.

The society would have expelled Isaac Newton if it made judgments on character & behaviour, Paul Nurse says.
