2025 was a brutal year. Horror knew it.

From Southern Gothic vampires to folk nightmares, teenage body horror, and post-civilisation survival, these are the 30 horror films that defined the year for us. 💀
The 30 best horror* films of 2025
2025 was a banner year for horror. From lo-fi nightmares and brutal folk tales to muscular studio spectacles, these 30 horror and horror-adjacent films map a genre that’s angrier, stranger and more…

RIP Béla Tarr (1955-2026)

If you want to know where to begin, I strongly recommend Werckmeister Harmonies (2000), a cosmic nightmare that’s nominally about a travelling stuffed whale exhibit, but also about civilisation eating itself, the death drive & the dark forces unleashed by authoritarianism.

Ah, my twenties. Happy memories of Toyama-ken. 😄
@andrewpope.bsky.social here is a picture of you in a Pikachu suit on your birthday getting body slammed to the ground by two women. It is one of my favorite pictures.

@sharai.bsky.social and I had a great time sharing our thoughts on the most frustrating horror film of 2025, FRANKENSTEIN. Beautiful gowns!
It’s Monday and we’re wondering if you know where your monster is?

We won’t help you find it but you should listen to me and @andrewpope.bsky.social discuss Frankenstein (2025) while you look for it.

"How do I get to Greenwich?"
“Take this train. Three stops."

That lady was clearly in league with the Dark Elves.

I had family members who liked doing this for both movies and games and I find it distracting more than anything. I hate it because at its worse it actively worsens the color in the scene and at it's best it's just an annoying halo around the TV.
Half the people on here will bang on about buying 4K discs, or turning off motion smoothing, to get the filmmaker’s intended viewing experience; but whenever they post a picture of their TV it’s blasting some horrible neon colour all over the wall behind it. And they’re super proud! They paid extra!

Good news: a new horror film shooting this year from an acclaimed auteur director!

Bad news: it’s Xavier Dolan.

American politics right now seems predicated on 3 things: the imminent death of the President, the imminent bursting of a tech bubble, and the desire to defend/protest murderous land grabs, depending on who’s doing the grabbing. The tension between these factors leads to fairly psychotic behaviours.

My favourite low-stakes (heh) conspiracy theory: Jordan Peele delayed & repurposed his fourth horror film, which was to be a vampire movie, in part because it was too similar to SINNERS but also because Marvel offered him the chance to oversee the supernatural strand of the MCU starting with BLADE.
December 30, 2025 at 9:20 AM
The four movies I think might win the best picture Oscar are Sinners, OBAA, Hamnet and Marty Supreme - and it’s only the first two of those that we’ll still be talking about a decade later.
