"rich dipshit owner doesn't understand the industry he's bought into and clumsily destroys what made it good" feels less like a narrative unique to the washington post and more like the music that's been playing in the background of all our lives for at least 40 years

Bezos has killed the Washington Post's books pages. John Williams is a mensch, and a good and loyal friend, to me, to @backlisted.bsky.social and to anyone who loves literature and reading. Now more than ever, you know where not to buy your books, or anything else for that matter.
I'll say more before too long, but for now: Thanks to anyone who has ever read and supported the Post's books coverage.

Before the Jacquet news broke, I drafted a newsletter on who should replace Konaté. Timing, eh?

First thought: Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey

First reply I saw that made me go ‘oh yeah, probably that’: It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)
Deleted a post about “what’s your least favorite song” because the vibes are bad enough already.

Instead: what’s your favorite song that has a long title, say at least 6 words long?

Mine: “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” (Pearl Jam)

You have to feel for Harvey.

The average Premier League starter this season is 184 cms tall, 183 excluding goalkeepers. He’s 170.

Only one shorter player has started this season. To thrive at that height in the current PL he’d have to be exceptional. Being very good won’t cut it.

I'm gonna fucking flip 8 tables and i don't even actually work in the serialized short form entertainment industry so i can only imagine how writers, directors, actors, and showrunners are feeling right now
The Pitt got greenlit for a season 3, out next February, and the announcement has very funny comment from HBO chairman Casey Bloys that’s like “yeah, turns out if you just make a TV show like how we used to make TV shows you can have a 15+ episode season every year 🤷‍♂️”

Liverpool are top of the Premier League and Champions League for open play xG difference.
With Aaron Briggs taking the fall for the Reds' set plays, you can see why FSG retained Slot when the heat was on.

Crystal Palace: top club who are sadly enduring a rough season, but my word they have not helped themselves with their conduct during the transfer windows, the long-term, negative effect of which is to come across as untrustworthy people to do business with.

My best friend died 2 months ago aged 30. Yesterday we had his memorial. It was a beautiful day but, because he didn't have a will, his estranged family took his body away from us. His partner of 13 years doesn't know when or where he was buried. Please please make a will x

Who is Jérémy Jacquet? Is he worth signing six months before his arrival? Has Hughes tweaked Liverpool’s transfer policy? Why did the Reds chase Geertruida? How good is Hugo Ekitike? Have City improved since last season?

Here's @distancecovered.bsky.social and I discussing all this:

Jacquet plays in a back three at Rennes. Frimpong is a wing-back. He thrived alongside Wirtz in a 3-4-3 at Leverkusen. Frankfurt (Ekitike) ended last season regularly playing in some version of a formation with a back three as did Parma (Leoni).

All the pieces matter, detective.

First 30/35 minutes today was more like an NFL game than a footy match. The whole period was just waiting for Newcastle to restart play with a goal kick, long throw or corner.
Just 12 mins ball in play time in the first 30, 22 in the 1st half and 49 mins overall!!
The PL is reaching a tipping point

That third Liverpool goal tonight.

Gakpo to Ekitike to Gakpo to Wirtz to Salah to Wirtz.

Front four.
