you should make placeholder graphics look incredibly shitty!! making a game is a long and complicated process and if you use ai to make placeholders that look finished at a glance you'll probably forget some of it, and then people will scour your whole game and you'll look like a fraud.

As the owner of a proper doujin circle myself (albeit a low-activity one), I'd like to give some context and insight.
TL;DR "doujin" isn't just "indie but Japanese". It has a rather specific and structured form.

And then one for A Plumber for All Seasons, a spectacular Super Mario World fanhack that feels like if Rare made a sequel to SMW instead of DKC2 👀 Very impressive.

This might be a bit wild to say, but unironically this is why I hate when people go "oh well stop doing romhacks because shutdowns" because the romhacking scene and mods are the closest we have left comparable to shareware. Some indie devs literally start with romhacks and custom maps ffs
It's kinda wild how we had the Shareware Scene, which was our equivalent of the Doujin scene, but everything there got gobbled up and folded and basically became the companies we have making AAA games now. You got recruited, or pushed out, so there is this big "culture" gap
