Hello bsky! My lab at CU Boulder develops fluorescent tools for live cell imaging using protein and RNA engineering and chemical biology. We are particularly interested in metal ions and RNA. I am also passionate about teaching and mentoring. And I admit I love the occasional cat video.

For ESIs dealing with grants being rescinded: if an investigator’s 1st substantial independent research award is terminated within the first 3 years of the project period (not due to scientific misconduct ) they can request the reinstatement of ESI status

If you're in the US, considering Europe for your PhD, and you identify as a minority, I will chat with you and review any application documents you need 🧪
Many US students don’t know how to seek opportunities outside the US. With some help from our colleagues in EU and Canada, we could put together a consolidated website of PhD opportunities and scholarships outside the US, organized by field. There might still be time for this year in some places.
I’m having similar conversations and sharing international opportunities a lot. I’m sure for a lot of US based trainees that feels overwhelming. I moved to Europe for my postdoc.Happy to chat with any trainees about my experience if it would be helpful.

NIH Study sections that will likely "not meet as scheduled" today: BMBI, MRAD, MSFA, NDPR, POMD, SMEP, ZRG1  IIDB-F, ZRG1  SCIL-G. Will mark them down once the CSR page updates!
Wondering if your study section cancelled? I update this sheet daily. As of today, 56/124 study sections that should have met since Jan 2, 2025 have "not met as scheduled." docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Apologies for this long post I put together to explain to non-scientists the impact of NIH cuts: Last night, an “atomic bomb” was dropped on the biomedical science community. We were informed that effective immediately, indirect costs on NIH grants (both current and future) would be fixed at 15%.

"The goal is to kill universities". And I might add to kill the entire research and development enterprise of the US. No universities (and no medical schools!) means no US innovation, no training of scientists, doctors, engineers, mathematicians, etc. Goodbye US dominance. Hello Chinese dominance.

The U.S. #NationalWeatherService, housed within #NOAA, is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. It costs only ~$3/yr per taxpayer, & yields ~10:1 return on investment--saving economy 10s-100s of billions, not to mention thousands of lives.
Hearing reports that Musk’s cronies are targeting NOAA — infiltrating key systems and locking out career employees.

NOAA is vital for weather forecasting, scientific research and more. Their critical work saves lives.

My team and I are looking into this and we will not stand for it.

These programs have transformed the lives of low income, first generation, and people of color, folks who have long been excluded from science, research, and medicine. Cancelling these programs is a huge blow to the strength of our future workforce. This is sheer stupidity.
Several Graduate T32s (G-RISE, IMSD, Bridges to the Doctorate) and the MARC T34 (for undergraduates) training grants now have expiration dates of today, 1/30/2025.
