Hello to anyone new! I write fantasy stories about loving broken things. My most recent book was The Map and the Territory, a post-apocalyptic picaresque about a cartographer and a wizard trying to get home in a shattered world haunted by a death goddess.
It's incredible how you can discern the exact half-hour when one of your posts hits the Discovery feed

Reading The Siege of Burning Grass by @premeemohamed.com and honestly it is a crime that publishing hasn't given this woman a million dollars to just write books forever

Her prose is beautiful, her worldbuilding exquisite, her characters fascinating

I waited a day to say this bc I respected everyone's right to vent some anger, but *remember to focus on what you can do*. Whether it's defending your community, taking action around what you've been venting about, whatever — but don't let all of your energy get captured in the social media space.

Every time I find myself seething with rage--and I find myself in that state quite often, lately--I ask myself, "What actions can I take right now to make things better for someone?"

And it helps. Refocusing from feeling to action has kept me from spiraling, and has probably helped several people.

not to keep shilling this, but I still have slots available! show me a donation receipt to a food bank and tell me the information I requested in the thread below, and I will make a menu for your cat. weird little details (and pictures!) encouraged. I promise this is fun for me lmao
hi! maybe you remember me from the menu i made for my cat, which hit surprisingly big a little while ago. i made some menus for other people's pets in exchange for donations to pro-trans organisations. now i'm doing it again, but for food banks.

please share! more info downthread!

Today's a great day to support some creators.

Writers and artists and creatives of all sorts: reply with a link to one of your works. And feel free to tell us about it.

Everyone: let's check through the replies and buy some creations and support some human beings.

I know many of us are tired, scared & angry. When you can, if you can, channel that into doing what you can to help. Every day it's more clear the only ones who are going to save us ... are us.

Whenever you start to say "people should do x," it's you. You're "people." We're "people." It's just us.

I will be very interested to see the primary challengers for New York's senators when their terms are up.

At the risk of sounding like a scold for posting about this too much: your call to a senator right now could be a key factor at a crucial moment. Please read this thread & call if you haven't.
Following up on this. This remains a ‘cave is minutes or hours away’ situation. If you want to impact how this plays out you need to contact senators literally now. I want to add additional points of context. What I’m relaying is what I’ve picked up from highly reliable sources.
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

If you're fortunate enough to have a Democratic senator, please give them a call and tell them you want them to oppose any resolution that does not extend the ACA tax credits, you can reach the US Senate switchboard at (202) 224-3121 (you'll be prompted to select your senator at this line!)

Periodic reminder: If you, a person who has previously loved writing, find yourself saying, "I don't like writing; I like having written," you may be experiencing burnout! Please seriously consider taking steps to treat your burnout instead of accepting that writing is just a horrible slog now!
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

“When you erase history, you make it easier to repeat…It’s about shaping what people believe about America itself…if the struggles of Black Americans are scrubbed…then it becomes easier to claim that systemic racism never existed in the first place. And that’s the real goal.” - Julian Vasquez Heili
1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

I am so averse to having AI even make suggestions about my writing that I've taken to drafting my novels in private Dreamwidth posts. The HTML text editor has nothing to say about what my next word should be. (Doing this has the bonus side effect of making writing feel lower-stakes!)
Hands up if you've never used Chat GPT ✋

(I feel like Dozer and Tank in The Matrix right now - at first I didn't use it because, rather ironically, I'm lazy and stubborn (peak Taurus energy there) - literally no, don't make me use the new thing I don't wanna. Now I'm glad I didn't 😅)
Probably a good way to tell right now if the job you’re applying for is run by absolute dumbfucks is to ask if they’re using AI.
