Hello to anyone new! I write fantasy stories about loving broken things. My most recent book was The Map and the Territory, a post-apocalyptic picaresque about a cartographer and a wizard trying to get home in a shattered world haunted by a death goddess.
Outlined the master plot of knights yaoi to my wife, and she did not at any point say "that's dumb" or "that will never work," so I guess we're a go on the project

Finally worked through all of my outstanding library holds; reloaded back to my limit of ten holds. Several series starters in this batch--I'm excited to see whether they're worth continuing!

In creative professions, I've found that it is more important to have friends than to have contacts with an "in." You need relationships that are not transactional to flourish as a human being--and there is no true flourishing that is not flourishing as a human being.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

Every single gay wizard in my stories is a special present to myself
Okay #WritingCommunity, what is a gift you give to yourself in your writing? What tropes or details or motifs do you use simply because you love them?

I love the tiny badass woman trope. I include the trope all the time.

I also love roses, and include them frequently as symbols and motifs.

Spending the holiday exactly as pleases me best: reading about absurdly dangerous cave diving in a possibly-haunted cavern. (The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling)

E. Catherine Tobler's "The Louder I Call, the Faster It Runs" (pseudopod.org/2025/07/25/p...) -- An atmospheric short story set at a lake, about a search for a missing man that threatens to uncover a monstrous secret.

Lee Mandelo's "The Woods All Black" -- A novella that pits the horrors of being queer in rural Appalachia against the terrifying glory of the monstrous. This book does not equivocate or do "both sides" storytelling. It commits to its heroes, and lets them decide what justice looks like.
