Will's gotta stop with bad housing takes. Americans did not merely reveal preferences. There was concerted government action to destroy old urban housing, impose exclusionary zoning on new construction, plus massive subsidies for highways and individual mortgages that gave us SFH sprawl.

People keep saying that poverty is about “feeling poor” but at that point you’ve basically conceded that it’s detached from real material conditions completely, which in turn implies that people can feel poor at any time, and that reducing material deprivation won’t make people happier.
I’m not sure I believe this. The experience of inflation and resulting outrage has a lot less to do with the price of goods and a lot more to do with broad satisfaction with society, whether one *feels* poorer than one ought to.
“Inflation as an experience is self-certifying” - you might think this, but people enthusiastically shared memes for years about grocery prices going up 200-300%. Everyone is wildly underestimating the strength of social persuasion and consensus to override reality
