What happens when a traditional politician picks a social media figure with no political experience as his vice president? Keep an eye on Bolivia—because we are going to find out! And it may be a harbinger for the other nations.

Same tbh. I also keep busy gnawing on carcasses in my mind. The carcasses of long dead arguments, which I lost.
Polar bears are intelligent and will look for ways to keep busy when they have nothing better to do. Gnawing on this dry carcass is exactly that - a mindless way to pass the time while waiting for the bay to freeze. #BearSeason2025 #mammals 🌿

The feud between Bolivia’s newly elected President and VP has multiple implications—not the least of which is a lesson relevant to the U.S. on what weak institutions mean for democratic governance.

For Bolivia watchers the newly elected VP’s feud w/ the president was almost inevitable. With an economy in freefall, this is not what Bolivia needs. But it's also food for thought for any country where the institutions are weak—including here in the U.S.

In today’s Veeply Roundup I take on some of the big questions:

Do we need lieutenant governors?

Why does Honduras have 3 vice presidents?

Did JD Vance send the Secretary of the Army to Ukraine?

As you can see from the title, lots of questions in today’s Veeply Roundup. We also ask: what does Secretary of the Army and friend of VP Vance participating in Ukraine talks say about Vance’s standing in the White House? For answers, read on!

For Thanksgiving Throwback Thursday I write about why Aaron Burr (of all people) was our most important VP. We should be thankful for his use of the powers of the vice presidency to protect our democracy. Despite it all, we have much to be thankful for.

In the spirit of the day, this Veepologist will express thanks to… Aaron Burr!?!? In a profound way he made this country better.

I’m also thankful for my readers, and my freedom to devote myself to doing things I love: writing, teaching, and helping others.

The core conceit of Veepology is that looking at Vice Presidents can tell you something about a nation’s politics. That is certainly true in Venezuela, where VP Delcy Rodriguez plays a major role. Timely reading as the U.S. pressures the Bolivarian regime.

Given all the doings around Venezuela, I thought we’d take a look at their vice president, Delcy Rodriguez. Compared to most VPs she exercises a great deal of power—there are institutional reasons for this unique vice presidency.

Lots going on with Venezuela these days, so we took a look at their vice president. Turns out, Venezuela’s VP is a potentially strong position and the current VP, is a major player overseeing the economy and the intelligence apparatus.

The most recent Down the Hall is a medley. We say happy birthday to President Garfield and look at Trump’s plans for another DC landmark. But most importantly, while discussing the VP’s comments on his family’s religion, I learned something from my wife.

It is actually an incredibly frustrating time to be a theoretical neuroscientist right now imo, for this reason
Same for neuroscience. The lack of ability to measure many neurons’ activity, perturb them, and measure intracellular processes and connections is what limits understanding the brain.

The key barriers are not algorithms or AI.

Putting aside Hassett’s wackiness, there is a deeper problem here. AI paired with an experienced human user can be super productive. But how will we get the experienced human users if we don’t prepare them?
Kevin Hassett: "I think there could be a little bit of an almost quiet time in the labor market, because firms are finding that AI is making their workers so productive that they don't necessarily have to hire the new kids out of college and so on."
