This looks amazing and I frikkin loved the Jade City books. (Also I know it’s the way of publishing now, but I do not love getting excited about a book only to discover it’s half a year away…)
COVER REVEAL: My next book is a standalone science fiction cyberpunk thriller starring aging corporate samurai. The Last Contract of Isako will be out on May 5, 2026 from @orbitbooks.bsky.social. Can't wait to share it with you. Thank you to @tommypocket.bsky.social for this kickass cover ⚔️

This 🧵 gets closer to what is actually happening in my writing classroom than most. I’ll be working away and then—BAM—existential professional crisis as I see just enough confirmation of synthetic text/synthetic ‘thought’ that it erodes everything…
Finally got to the "I want to burn it all down" portion of the gen AI-era semester, where I realize they're all using some sort of LLM to "help" organize their thoughts and it's just spitting out raw sewage onto the screen.

OTD in 680 CE Hild of Whitby died. Ever year I celebrate. This year by a) showing off my fabulous, specially commissioned snakestone cast in silver to wear as a lapel pin, silver jacket pin cast in silver, and her death
b) my imagined version of her grave marker
Celebrating Hild
On this day in 680 CE Hild of Whitby, patron saint of learning and culture (including poetry) died. I mark her feast day because she marked my life, and my writing, indelibly.

For the Disability community, losing Alice Wong is like losing Ursula Le Guin or Octavia Butler. She was a powerhouse, a pioneer, and a mentor to many. She taught me so much. And always reminded me what we were fighting towards, as well as against. I miss her clarity, bravery, and joy.
Alice Wong
Alice Wong had an outsized impact on Disability justice. As a community organiser, activist, mentor, and co-conspirator, as writer, editor, and friend, she is irreplaceable.

Whoa that was quick
BREAKING: Just 7 days after Mayor Lurie appointed her to be the Sunset supervisor, Beya Alcaraz is out.

She resigned today after multiple unflattering stories, including one just hours ago broken by Mission Local on a potential tax dodge.

This is one of several books I recommend (repeatedly) to people who want to better understand the current tech broligarchy of which AI is (now) the leading edge. It is disturbing and it is excellent.

I get this a lot too. I don't use ChatGPT or any LLMs in my work because I want my writing to sound like me, not like the averaged-out voice of the internet. But also, writing is thinking, and thinking is a habit. I don't want to get out of that habit.
A friend recently texted me the same thing. “Do you really not use ChatGPT?!” It was a sign of where we are culturally on this. People are compelled to use it but also starting to question the normalcy?
Recently met someone who was very surprised to hear I didn’t use ChatGPT or any LLM.

I said my job depended on doing distinctive work. That was my selling point. If I started to sound like ChatGPT and turn out what it did, then how on earth could I justify doing it? What would that make me?

And there are many other reasons I don't use LLMs. They're not reliable, they are built on theft, their creation incurs environmental costs & direct harm to people. The broader societal push to use AI for everything is destructive in countless ways & has horrifying political ramifications.

From Evan: it's a huge night of hope for the trans community. The Republicans went all in on anti-trans ads in multiple races and so far there's no sign it got them anything.

Perhaps the page can be turned on blaming us for Harris' loss last year.
