A couple of years ago, I read a paper with a title like “a questionnaire that may actually measure psychological flexibility (maybe)” but I can’t find it now. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Grad students - please never interpret "failed" experiments as *your* failures.

A null result is a *null result*. And all it should reflect about you is that you were willing to ask a cool question.

Cool investigations into subtle cues profs give, in predicting student participation & inclusion perceptions.

I am naturally that type of prof who talks to students before lectures. Often wondered if it "matters".

Turns out, it does.

In support of the idea that STEM belonging is crucial, the US Dept. of Ed. created a “YOU Belong In STEM” initiative in 2022 to strengthen nationwide STEM education outcomes by promoting a sense of belonging for all students. This paper represents part of our participation in this initiative. (12/N)

Most funding/efforts to broaden participation focus on STEM or general science, rather than specific CS and ENG. Given reduced opportunities for funding K-12 STEM education research, we need to focus efforts on the fields and specific groups of students for whom belonging is most threatened. (9/N)

Why does this matter? Belonging plays a key role in whether adolescents choose to take STEM courses, major in STEM fields, and enter STEM careers. However, not everyone feels that they belong there. (8/N)

Middle school was a particularly vulnerable time for girls, especially Latina girls in all four STEM fields. (6/N)
January 27, 2026 at 6:57 PM
So we combined 5 large datasets from our lab with >6,000 students in Grades 1-12 in a mega-analysis. Key findings: gender gaps began in middle school, were largest in middle and high school, and were largest in CS and engineering (all STEM fields are not the same!). (5/N)
January 27, 2026 at 6:57 PM
We review these, including findings of how belonging predicts motivation/learning, and how social cues and experiences predict belonging. Gender differences were largest in high school. However, this review showed a clear need for more systematic research comparing different STEM fields. (4/N)
