The coverage in the next day’s Las Vegas Review-Journal was just a little sensational, especially given how little information the Atomic Energy Commission actually released about the test itself.

Another factor is the large economy doesn’t see single company/industry changes drive national figures the way they can in smaller economies. So, less data conditioning is needed.

The remaining decline is in part related to the fact that community college enrollment is countercyclical.
In recessions, when jobs are scarce, some folks choose community college because that's the best available option.
When jobs are plentiful, those potential students instead choose jobs.

If women are underrepresented in STEM, it's at least partly because men like this offer mentoring, then embarrass themselves by assuming their mentees must be into them, then decide the best solution is to cut ties, which sends the signal to other faculty that the mentee must not be good enough.
