Pope Leo's first sermon and, uh, his using the phrase "be ever more fully a city set upon a hill" and cf'ing it to Rev 21:10 instead of any of the others before saying "many baptized Christians" are "living in a state of practical atheism" is. Well. Shots fired!

Read Pope Leo XIV's first homily as pope
During his homily, delivered in Italian, Leo XIV said that Christians must serve a world that is often hostile to their beliefs.

Why does it feel like our nation was bought by a private equity fund all of a sudden

It is absolutely insane that we're allowing billionaires who pay nothing or next to nothing in taxes decide that we're spending too much in our government. The people that are getting cut are hardworking Americans and public servants, not freeloaders. Despicable decisions that will hurt our country
CDC source:

“We just had word that all our fellows and post doc staff are laid off effective immediately. The famous Epidemic Intelligence Service, aka the Disease Detectives, is no more. That’s 1260 staff.

They are calling this ‘Phase 1’.”

2024 wasn't all perfect, but I achieved a childhood dream of mine and finally traveled outside of the US for an incredible time in Japan. I'm very grateful for the opportunities I've had and am hoping next year is as good, just maybe without some of the negatives from this year!

Arguably one of Jimmy Carter's greatest achievement is bringing the world to the brink of eradicating the Guinea Worm.

From 3.5m cases a year in the 80s to less than 15 the last few years. It's an astounding public health achievement.

I cannot say how many times I've listened to this video, it's such a great documentation of this attraction and I really adore the arrangements of classic muppet songs used while showcasing the extended queue. It just hits all the right nostalgia buttons

I'm finding it tough to reconcile the idea that a large number of people in my country either didn't do enough research or just don't care about each other in general. All I can do at this point is try to be kind to others and hope maybe someone else will see the kindness and follow suit

i know we're all having, let's say, a rough one but i beg of you to keep going, there is still good in the world and even in America, and we need you in it. and if that doesn't work then let the hate flow through you and keep going out of spite because we need you for that too

One of my favorite records I've bought is this random Liberace album I picked up from the bargain bin for $1. Its got some really pleasant instrumentals on it, I highly recommend just sitting back and putting it on via streaming if you want some music to relax to!
