This has to be one of the worst articles I’ve ever read about Taiwan. If you don’t know enough about Taiwan to gauge just how wrong it is then the author crediting Elon Musk as a China expert will surely give you an indication
The U.S. Must Beware of Taiwan's Reckless Leader
William Lai is lurching toward formal independence, which could trigger a catastrophic U.S.-China war, writes Lyle Goldstein.

As a long-time resident in Taiwan, it's clear that Lai Ching-te's rhetoric of Taiwan hasn't substantially changed from Tsai Ing-wen. What has clearly changed is the CCP has up its tempo with its aggression against Taiwan. This is clear when analyzing the data. 1/

The international reporting on Taiwan's recall vote has suffered from their usual "both-sides" framing, but the FT gets it right: it is a story about the KMT becoming estranged from the electorate:

Fact: everyone in Taiwan knows some 60 year old Taiwanese ladies who are much braver than this muscular influencer.
Other quotes from Holger Chen:
"China's attacking Taiwan is as easy as crushing a cockroach, and the Republic of China will surrender in two minutes!"
"All Taiwanese are Chinese."
"The DPP is the lap dog of the United States."

I’m fascinated by what they have talked themselves into here.
Brooke Rollins on farm laborers: "There will be no amnesty. The mass deportations continue, but in a strategic way. And we move the workforce toward automation and 100% American participation, which with 34 million able-bodied on Medicaid we should be able to do fairly quickly."

Some people in Taiwan think or romanticizes that if Taiwan becomes part of China, things will be better.

But we need to pause and think, what value-add does Taiwan provide for China, if Taiwan is part of China?

Musk is certainly not stepping back, he's just trying to be more quiet about it but there was no way he was going miss this ambush
Update: Despite widespread reports of Musk “stepping back” from politics, he is still standing near enough by that the President runs US foreign policy in the insane way Musk wants it run and waves at him while doing so.

The world is going to quickly get tired of this bullshit just as it did with Beijing's wolf warrior diplomacy
1/ The US government has ordered the Swedish city of Stockholm to end its diversity, inclusivity and equality (DEI) programmes within 10 days. The city authorities say the demand is "bizarre" and they won't be complying. ⬇️

Trump's "peace" negotiations were never going to demand anything other than the surrender of Ukrainian land with no security guarantees. It's been clear for a very long time that Trump is aligned with Putin in his belief that might makes right

Regarding the KMT behaving irrationally when it comes to recalls, since this has never happened before, ever, I think it’s leading to a lot of unnecessary panic on their part. They may have felt that while they seem unable to win the presidency now for an unprecedented 3 times

Yall wanna hear something extremely embarrassing? Before Trump’s election, a bunch of academics who lumbered rightward after being criticized by the left (Pinker, Dawkins, Krauss) wrote essays for a book that is coming out in July about the threats to academia from the left.

Either the U.S. government *is* able to exert monetary and diplomatic pressure on El Salvador sufficient to produce Abrego Garcia’s release, or it isn’t.

The latter would be either a bald-faced lie or a pretty stunning concession of our national impotence. The Vice President should pick one.
