Every year, I read a book for Christmas break. I read David Graeber's Bullshit Jobs in 2022, and man, has this passage stuck with me. Dude was ahead of the curve.

Canada takes the stage.

Given the circumstances, I'd say thst he is overperforming for a political newcomer.
Canadian PM Mark Carney calls on middle powers to create a "third path" of value-based realism.

"We shouldn’t allow the rise of hard power to blind us to the fact that the power of legitimacy, integrity, and rules will remain strong if we choose to wield it together"

Second, everyday life is still pretty normal here. It's the exceptions that send off alarm bells. Things are good until suddenly they arent.

An observation (or two) from down south. First, y'all have responded well. I see a level of social cohesion that reminds me of the U.S. in the 30s. People either rise to the moment or they don't, and so far, you have.

FWIW, he's openly acknowledged that the best proof of his ideas and governing philosophy is when they succeed. He may be a socialist, but he's sending signals that he's also a pragmatist.

My wife is Canadian. I asked her about some old cannons pointing across the Detroit river a few years ago. She stayed quiet. 😂

An enterprising left-leaning politician might find a way to work with evangelicals to regulate the industry across-the-board. But doing that would require leadership.

The Trump administration has said it was improving the SSA. A year in, it looks like the mess that everyone else predicted. Not enough staff, manipulation of numbers and declining performance.

Exhibit A in why the Democrats are completely feckless. Franken resigned over indiscretions that look trivial compared to those of Trump, when all he needed to do was say, "I'll resign when he does."

If you're gonna self-immolate, then make some good come from it.

Something that suprized in 2025 was the maximalist Canadian response to the Trump administration. What didn't suprize me was how little my countrymen understand our neighbors.
