The films were produced by Nicholas Cartoons, later responsible for the series Willo the Wisp, and Joe and Petunia's voices were provided by Peter Hawkins and Wendy Craig respectively (Brigit Forsyth in their last appearance).

Their tragedy did not keep them from experiencing a couple of brief pseudo-revivals. Their first film was upgraded in 2006 with modern technology to commemorate the COI's 60th anniversary, and repurposed in 2018 for the characters' 50th anniversary on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.
