The @ipcc.bsky.social figure I posted above, I will note here, does not include post-report research showing ALREADY elevated risk of individual tipping points with global implications, such as the now likely over 50% risk of AMOC collapse this century.

Just a few things I'd like to say about this @hausfath.bsky.social piece.

The first is that every 10th of a degree of heating over 2C raises risks for multiple irreversible catastrophes MORE than every 10th of a degree of heating under 2C.

That's why the 2C target exists. It's not random.

Even dirt cheap clean energy is not a climate solution unless we ALSO phase out fossil fuels.
Of course, we should make clean energy cheap! But the policies on the table in the US that supposedly would do that all enable the easier build out of more fossil fuel infrastructure, which is why the American Petroleum Institute and the Koch network are lobbying for them.

it’s about oil and yet from an energy markets perspective that doesn’t make much sense, unless we assume USG all but seizes control of US oil companies. Karthik Sankaran outlines the doesn’t-make-sense reasons here: responsiblestatecraft.org/venezuela-oil/

The White House is proudly embracing an era of fossil-fuel imperialism when global markets are vastly different

This year has been brutal for the #climate movement.

Rollbacks, repression, & outright denial, especially in the US, have made progress feel fragile & uneven.

Which is exactly why it matters to pause & look back at what did move forward in 2025.

Here are 12 real wins 🏆, one for each month 🧵⬇️

Extremely important thread from my boy David. One thing to add on top of this is just how remarkably bad we've been so far at using less oil than various projections suggest we'll use.

It's one thing for tech to grow faster than predicted: but fossil fuels should *fall* faster than predicted too!

I’m not going to win any prizes for my crappy photos but about 20 of us did a #NewYearPlanyHunt today around bristol.

The docks & old railway throw up interesting oddities for obvious reasons.

This pic is like Where’s Wally - at least 5 wildflowers are hidden in this one.

If you think Trump's comments about capturing oil in V aren't sincere because the country has bad, old and inefficient fossil infrastructure, I regret to inform you that all fossil fuel infrastructure is bad, old and inefficient and none of these people actually care about the process or product

And once again, we are going to fall victim to the 16th century Flemish geographer Gerardus Mercator's projections.
People wondering whether the US is going to be able to "run the country" of Venezuela at "no cost" might like to remind themselves it's a place one-third *larger* than Afghanistan, the running of which cost the US $2,260,000,000,000. (That's $2.26 trillion).

I can define why I feel weird exactly - folks like Maduro are adored by DJT by definition. All this makes no sense, and we are stuck in the limbo of believing what we are seeing when what we are seeing isn’t the reality. Time will tell.
