Liam Rosenior could actually be a decent manager for Chelsea, his approach at Hull City was very similar to Kompany's at Burnley, in that he visibly treated it as an audition for a top club.

But Chelsea's fans are going to totally destroy him, so it's moot

Chelsea: Liam Rosenior appointed as manager until 2032
Chelsea appoint Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior as head coach, replacing Enzo Maresca.

"Stegosaurus never saw flowers" is a great name for a song
1. The Bolsheviks had overthrown a democratic government, not the Czar
2. The 75 in French 75 is the field gun caliber, not the year
3. Electric cars appeared long before the petrol ones
4. Stegosauruses never saw flowers
5. In the first 90% of human history there was next to no tech/social progress
Here’s a fun top five: things that are consensus among historians but are essentially unknown by the public. Richard I, a bad king of England. Roman Empire, fell in 1453. Paul, more important than Jesus. Witch burning, a modern phenomenon not a medieval one. Britain last invaded in 1688. Yours?

I know English people get snooty about Scottish football, but narratively, the SPL title race is the most interesting thing happening in world football imo.

Hearts trying to cling on to break the 40 year duopoly as Celtic fall apart and Rangers get their shit together is absolutely compelling

My thoughts are with everyone who is trying to stick to new year's resolutions based around eating less and doing more exercise while every cell in their body tells them to stay in bed and eat carbs

There's a lot that's nad about the current moment, but what gets me is the White House's apparently strategic decision to turn the US from a global power to a regional power.

It's just so incredibly declinist
January 4, 2026 at 7:04 AM
One mad thing about the sudden mania for US territorial expansion is that it's clearly *already* so big it's struggling to hold together as a single polity
January 3, 2026 at 11:11 PM
Thing I would like to read an expert opinion on: what the US getting all Monroe Doctrine-y in South America in the context of China acting even more aggressively around Taiwan.

The implication that the natural role of superpowers is to dominate their back yard is... troubling

If you're writing incredibly confident international relations takes on Trump and Venezuela I'm going to need some credentials to justify that confidence please

Not the main thing this morning, but it's remarkable how much of a nose dive the comments section in the FT has taken in the last 2 years.

It used to be a rare haven of knowledgeable and reasonable discussion, but this is all garbage:

I feel like the response to a US President attacking Venezuela shouldn't be "arch jokes about the FIFA peace prize"

As with many things, it turns out Private Eye had the scoop on noncebot long before anyone else
Just FYI, Private Eye first reported on Grok being used for this exact purpose in May 2025
Several French government ministers have reported the unlawful production of sexualised material without consent to the police and prosecutors. The UK government, which published a high profile strategy on misogyny just before Christmas, has yet to say or do anything

We absolutely shouldn't all refer to Grok as "noncebot" from now on

I've just found out that Brixton News, the amazing magazine shop in Brixton station, is being kicked out by TfL in February.

A real shame, and a sad loss for anyone who enjoys reading physical stuff

Fascinating thread but I don't feel it's that complicated? This is what happens when you go out of your way to performatively kick your own coalition in the hope of impressing voters who never liked you to start with.
Glad the FT is asking the question. Even if I’m not convinced they found a compelling answer.
I get that Starmer & Reeves are unpopular, I really don’t understand the extent of the dislike.

Simple, it's because there isn't a political constituency that doesn't think they're disingenuous liars.

The right: hear them talk tough on immigration but know they don't believe it

Pro-EU: feel betrayed by supposedly one of their own

The left: think Starmer lied to win the leadership

The England Travelling Supporters Club has just announced that conditional ticket applications for the Round of 32, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final are UNDERSUBSCRIBED.

Incredible stuff tbh. Is anyone going to be at this World Cup?

Fascinated by the new PureGym ad positioning them as places to feel good, as if PureGym customers aren't going into a basement with minimal natural light and queuing for the squat machine to look marginally more attractive on Instagram
