Have we all just been doing this silently the whole time?

(A great tip I got from someone was to buy a cheap coffee grinder and use it to grind toasted peppercorns that you can add ok top, it's about 20 minutes work once a month to effortlessly add mala to any dish)

If ever there was a day in the football calendar that felt ideal for a combined terrestrial / YouTube loss leader strategy (domestically and internationally), surely it's this?

The majority of the 3rd Round of the FA Cup is on TNT Sport today, which feels like a real lose/lose all round.

Bad for the FA because it makes the competition less relevant, bad for TNT Sport because anyone whose team is playing is just going to pirate it, and bad for fans for obvious reasons.

Best English language newspaper in the world today I'd wager
Good morning here is your FT Weekend thread of highlights because it is freezing and you should stay inside. Gift links are free 300x. I don’t want a repeat of the Yann LeCun lunch where it escaped our little community and I had AI fans shouting about links for days.

Moderately interesting: Charlton are putting on coaches for their HOME game tonight from a number of towns in the south-east

Thank you, that's all very interesting.

(Also, this has been a very surprising window into what your @ mentions must look like every day, well done on not going totally insane)

It is interesting to ponder "will this be seen in the app or decontextualised on social media?"

Stephen, I'd be curious to know what your editors will typically optimise for
January 8, 2026 at 12:14 PM
One of my pub rant topics is that the BBC's website is awful for clickbait headlines.

Clearly this is the result of some kind of internal targets to (needlessly) chase traffic numbers, but it chips away at trust in a way that must be hugely damaging
January 8, 2026 at 12:06 PM
Not to be uncharitable to your employer, but I do think the editor is rather inviting that reaction with the choice of headline

This looks like it's going to be an absolute shitshow (politically and for the 3 million people affected) if it's not kicked into the long grass.

I just got a YouTube ad for GoDaddy that contained the line "find a web domain faster than a shotgun lobotomy", which is an incredibly Infinite Jest-y thing to see in real life

(I think Polanski is doing a decent job as an Overton-window-shifting fringe party leader whose main job is reminding people the Greens exist, but he would be a Truss-level PM)
January 8, 2026 at 10:46 AM
Objectively mad that Polanski, a bloke that has basically been dragged out of a pub to be a party leader who nobody had heard of until a few months ago, is only 6% behind Davey as the preferred PM
Which potential coalitions have the most support from Britons?

LD + Lab, Davey PM: 36% support
Lab + Grn, Starmer PM: 33%
Lab + LD, Starmer PM: 31%
Grn + Lab, Polanski PM: 30%
Ref + Con, Farage PM: 29%
LD + Con, Davey PM: 26%
Con + Ref, Badenoch PM: 25%

"Grandfather, what were you doing when the world changed forever?"

"Mainly dunking on Ian Leslie"
January 7, 2026 at 11:06 PM
The present moment is very weird because the sudden collapse of the rules based international order is possibly the most significant world historical change since the Berlin Wall came down, and all we're doing is trying to one-up each other on jokes
January 7, 2026 at 11:05 PM
HA! Extremely fair

Counter-point: the Hundred hiding behind women's cricket is lazy and lets the organisers weasel out of defending their terrible decisions.

Could a women's city-based T20 competition have been a success? Of course!

Stephen, please tell me you are familiar with Nick's magnum opus, the Daytime Snaps Twitter account?
