The truth is, way too many journalists & content creators sat there and said nothing when SESTA-FOSTA passed, when OSA passed, when OF nearly lost porn due to paypros, even during this summer’s Collective Shout situation. A slow apocalypse for the free and open internet has been unfolding for years

Mohammad is an amazing farmer, able to grow crops like magic in the midst of tents and rubble, and his story is devastating. Please read his words about the importance of the land and donate to him. He supports 13 people on donations alone.

We’ve been screaming from the rooftops about the threat of this tech and how it would be used to control & oppress us. But it’s not too late to fight back!

At least 23 states have now passed/expanded laws to restrict biometric scanning. www.npr.org/2025/08/28/n...
With no federal facial recognition law, states rush to fill void
Nearly two dozen states have passed laws regulating how tech companies collect data from our faces, eyes and voices. It comes as Congress has yet to pass any facial recognition technology.

and so many examples of authoritarian violence before this! Over and over.
All the liberals screaming that Trump turned the US into an authoritarian police state have not been living in the same country as the rest of us. This was Standing Rock almost a decade ago. Compare it to the footage from Chicago. The difference now is that affluent white people are being affected.

Add consumer AR glasses (Meta, Snap) and security cameras like Ring etc which will for sure share their video data streams - and you have a recipe for a modern dystopian surveillance capitalist state.
NEW: DHS is asking companies to submit plans to turn standard 4x4 trucks into AI-powered watchtowers—combining radar, cameras, and autonomous tracking to extend surveillance on demand.

Hey y'all, this interview is a really important look at what trans protesters are facing, especially when the cops haul them off to jail on allegations like...writing "trans rights are human rights" in chalk.
BREAKING - Overnight in August, the city of Orlando, Florida took down the Pulse Nightclub memorial rainbow crosswalk. The next day, people began protesting. TNN interviewed one of the protesters, who recounted horrific human rights abuses after her arrest. Written by @thefreeradical.org

The article talks about opening up central California to oil and gas development.. Looking at Bureau of Ocean Energy Management maps, this could include a large swath of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, including the Bodega and Año Nuevo basins, and Partington basin off Big Sur.

this is really really bad!!
The Trump administration plans to open whole swaths of the East and West Coasts to offshore oil and gas drilling, including areas previously protected for environmental reasons, according to federal documents reviewed by the Houston Chronicle.

I am here for the new Arts and Crafts
In food history, we notice how super-refined foods--gelatin, vienna sausage, white bread--lose class and become horrifying once they become industrialized. Suddenly, fingermarks in bread dough demonstrate skill, not clumsiness.

Post-chatGPT, I'm feeling this about writing. Smoothness feels gross.

Today, I wrote about the silence.
Not the silence of peace, but the quiet that falls between the explosions. The silence where you hear nothing but your own breathing and the whispers of a child clinging to your hand.

what were you doing in 2005? Compared to then, there are almost 75% fewer insects in this remote Colorado study site today. Imagine how much worse this loss is in places with pesticides!
Essential to functioning ecosystems, insects are declining at alarming rates--even in remote areas. A 20-year study in CO found an average annual decline of 6.6% in insect abundance, amounting to a 72.4% drop over the 20-year period. The steep decline was associated with rising summer temperatures.

I honestly think the majority of cis people are upset by trans existence, especially nonbinary existence, because as children we were all told there were things we weren't allowed to do or be or feel or say because we were a girl, or because we were a boy.

I honestly think that's unhealed trauma. 🧵
